About The Position

The Faculty Educator provides education and professional development within the organization to enhance patient outcomes and support ongoing professional growth. Under the Clinical Affairs portfolio, responsible for designing, delivering, and evaluating educational courses, ensuring adherence to high standards of patient care through collaboration with clinical leaders and partners, and implementing quality assurance measures. Under the Interprofessional Development & Professional Practice portfolio, responsible for designing, coordinating, and evaluating education activities across Initial Education, Continuing Professional Development, and Program/Corporate-wide support domains, including overseeing Maintenance of Certification mandates and quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field such as a Critical Care Paramedic, Advanced Care Flight Paramedic, Registered Nurse (Critical Care/Emergency), or Respiratory Therapy is required.
  • A minimum of 5-6 years of experience is required.
  • Critical Care Paramedic, Advanced Care Flight Paramedic, Registered Nurse (Critical Care/Emergency), Certified Clinical Perfusionist, or Respiratory Therapist (Critical Care/Emergency) is required.
  • Maintenance of Professional Certification/Clinical Activity (including Paramedics, through Base Hospital certification) is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Critical Care Paramedicine of the Terminal Credential or a related health care field is preferred.
  • Five (5) years of independent practice in a related healthcare field (Paramedic, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy) is preferred.
  • Two (2) years’ educational experience in teaching health professionals is preferred.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of adult education in various environments using a variety of media including simulation is preferred.
  • Experience designing, coordinating, and delivering courses in hybrid and distributed learning models is preferred.
  • Experience in the use of low and medium simulation equipment is preferred.
  • Simulation & Debriefing education/experience is preferred.
  • Medical Quality Assurance / CQI experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures student awareness of course objectives, approach, and evaluation techniques.
  • Carries out regularly scheduled instruction.
  • Provides “office hours” on a regular basis to provide opportunity for students to connect and provide course feedback, clarifications, and address course concerns.
  • Provides formative feedback and academic counseling of students.
  • Participate and support Student Success Plans as required.
  • Evaluates and assesses learner achievement/progression and course effectiveness.
  • From time to time, may be called upon to contribute to other area ancillary to the Faculty Educator role, such as student recruitment and selection, educator professional development and control of supplies and equipment.
  • Consults with Program Lead, other faculty members and program advisory committees to designs, develops, and evaluates initial education courses and content (e.g., Critical Care Paramedic, Flight Registered Nurse, Aeromedical Theory)
  • Defines course objectives and student evaluation strategies.
  • Develops operational training to maintain high patient care standards.
  • Selects textbooks and learning materials in accordance with course objectives/instructional needs.
  • Ensures compliance with Accreditation Canada standards and supports instructional design for asynchronous learning activities.
  • Designs, develops, and supports corporate/operational training (e.g., new equipment, MOH mandated training requirements, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) etc.).
  • Oversees the onboarding of new Nurses and administrative needs for Nurses returning to clinical practice, provides expertise for equipment acquisition, and supports Physician training in fellowship courses.
  • Leads "train-the-trainer" sessions for Paramedic Practice Mentors (PPMs) and Clinical Practice Leads (CPLs) involved in education delivery, as required.
  • Assists Simulation Specialists in planning equipment and space needs for simulations and base labs and supports simulation-based assessments.
  • Introduces innovative instructional concepts and techniques to enhance clinician learning and fosters positive and safe learning environments for colleagues and learners.
  • Participates in program oversight committee and sub-committees as requested and/or nominated.
  • Evaluates patient care and clinician performance through investigations, call reviews, analysis of clinical metrics/KPIs and meetings with front-line clinicians, coordinated with the Quality and Patient Safety Team.
  • Participates in cross-functional teams to evaluate current practices, conducting research to identify evidence informed improvements, and applying clinical expertise to develop innovative approaches.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to pilot new methodologies, assess the impact on patient safety and/or service delivery and support the integration of these innovations into standard operating procedures.
  • Participates in regular Faculty meetings to discuss program, course and student concerns/issues, feedback from program leads or review of data trends with respect to programs.
  • Conducts quality assurance (QA) auditing in alignment with Base Hospital (BH) mandated aspects of Maintenance of Certification and Ornge BH Performance Agreement, under the guidance of the Program Lead - Quality Improvement & Standards.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives as directed by departmental or organizational needs.
  • Evaluates patient care and clinician performance through investigations, call reviews, and meetings with front-line clinicians, coordinated with the Quality and Patient Safety Team.
  • Facilitates initial certification and credentialing processes for Primary Care Paramedics, Advanced Care (Land and Flight) Paramedics, Critical Care Paramedics, Flight RNs, and Medical Fellows, including assessment and evaluation.
  • Develops content to support the initial certification and credentialing processes.
  • Participates in Ontario Base Hospital Group (OBHG) committees and sub-committees as needed, in collaboration with accountable managers.
  • Assists the Manager, Clinical Performance & Patient Safety, and the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) in identifying, designing, developing, and implementing evidence- informed clinical practice guidelines, medical directives, and practice resources that enhance patient care delivery and outcomes.
  • The Faculty Educator engages in CPD to maintain expertise in clinical practice or domain expertise and to stay informed of emerging trends and best practices that contribute to the safe and effective delivery of service, and in alignment with organizational goals.
