About The Position

The Synchronous Condenser Systems Application Engineer will play a critical role in providing expert technical support for GE Vernova FACTS. This position requires a highly technical, customer-focused, and self-motivated individual. As a key member of this world-class team, the engineer will lead the technical strategy and high-level studies for Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) projects. The primary responsibilities include analyzing customer system-level requirements, performing studies, developing strategies and high-level specifications for Synchronous Condenser (SC) solutions, supporting execution of projects and ongoing support throughout the post-sales phases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar field from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 5 years of related engineering experience OR Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 3 years of related engineering experience
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% as required, which may include remote locations and international travel, and be willing to comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with other FACTS technologies (e.g., SVC, STATCOM, series compensation FSC, SSSC, TCSC).
  • Understanding of grid-forming controls and virtual synchronous machine algorithms.
  • Participation in industry working groups (IEEE, Cigre, IEC).
  • Knowledge of and experience using IEEE, IEC, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards and codes, with the ability to engineer design packages without explicit customer specifications.
  • Aptitude or experience in complex system-level studies of power systems involving grid problems relevant to FACTS solutions.
  • Proficiency in using electrical system modeling software (e.g., PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, EasyPower, ASPEN OneLiner, PSCAD, ATP-EMTP) for complex studies.
  • Experience in designing and executing solutions utilizing FACTS technology.
  • Prepare documentation and maintain a knowledge database of technical design processes, issues, and resolution outcomes.
  • Experience in installation, field-testing, and commissioning of HV equipment, with a commitment to safe work habits.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Apply expertise in large (50 to 300 MVA) synchronous machines, in theory, operation, and installation to develop and optimize synchronous condenser solutions.
  • Support sales and business development activities in pre-RFQ stages by presenting Synchronous Condenser offerings to prospective customers and discuss possible solutions that fit the customer requirements.
  • Support the preparation of tender packages for synchronous condenser solutions.
  • Analyze customer requirements; perform technical and commercial analysis to optimize system design and synchronous condenser machine selection.
  • Coordinate synchronous condenser system designs with machine factories and power system consultants.
  • Conduct necessary calculations for equipment selection in synchronous condenser projects, including load (var) flow, short-circuit, and insulation coordination.
  • Utilize Excel-based tools or specialized power systems software (e.g., PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, ATP-EMTP, EasyPower, ASPEN OneLiner).
  • Specify and select major plant items, such as GCBs, cooling systems, starting pony motors, and GSU transformers.
  • Perform site assessments for prospective synchronous condenser locations and adapt designs to fit within site constraints.
  • Participate in technical contract negotiations with prospective customers.
  • Conduct quality reviews of bid packages to maximize submittal quality.
  • Perform system studies to support synchronous condenser projects, and/or coordinate and review study work from external consultants
  • Prepare documentation and maintain a knowledge database of technical design processes, issues, and resolution outcomes.
