About The Position

This position is responsible for overseeing district-wide cleaning operations, safety compliance, and personnel management. This position serves as the primary liaison between building administrators and custodial staff, ensuring that all facilities maintain standards of cleanliness and operational efficiency. The Supervisor provides direct leadership to head custodians and maintenance personnel, coordinates comprehensive training programs, and manages large-scale projects, such as summer deep-cleaning, to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for students and staff.

Requirements

  • Must possess an Asbestos Inspector Certification License within 1 year of hire.
  • Must possess a EPA Lead-Safe Certification License within 1 year of hire
  • Must possess a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) License within 1 year of hire.
  • Must have at least 4 years of custodial experience.
  • Ability to work with a flexible work schedule to include evenings, nights and weekends.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies and building and department procedures.
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, use appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and the school community.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Knowledge of investigation and property protection methods.
  • Knowledge of mediation services and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials and safety procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and with little direction within scope of position.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the direct supervisor to all building head custodians and building engineers, overseeing district-wide operations to ensure consistent standards and service quality.
  • Assists head custodians in supervising all non-head custodians and recruits, hires, and evaluates the summer mowing crew.
  • Addresses employee performance concerns through corrective action, coaching, and documentation; prepares and administers written performance evaluations in accordance with district procedures.
  • Communicates effectively with building administrators to assess and prioritize custodial service needs.
  • Develops, coordinates, and delivers custodial training programs, including initial orientation for new staff/substitutes and ongoing in-service training on best practices and equipment.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development and maintains a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) designation to enhance supervisory effectiveness.
  • Organizes, schedules, and supervises summer deep-cleaning projects and district-wide flooring projects.
  • Oversees summer mowing operations and the district pesticide/herbicide application program in compliance with regulations.
  • Conducts regular inspections of school sites and semiannual playground inspections to verify maintenance objectives and safety standards are achieved.
  • Establishes and monitors preventative maintenance programs and lifecycle replacement schedules for cleaning, grounds, and playground equipment.
  • Coordinates and implements safety programs and serves as the District AHERA designated person, overseeing asbestos abatement and compliance documentation.
  • Oversees the investigation and resolution of environmental concerns, including indoor air quality, lead remediation, and paint disposal.
  • Collaborates with Maintenance staff to coordinate activities and resolve safety concerns.
  • Maintains availability for after-hours emergencies and serves as the primary contact for day-to-day building emergencies (e.g., equipment failure, water intrusion, sewer backups).
  • Identifies and procures custodial/grounds supplies and equipment; prepares and evaluates bids and quotes in accordance with district purchasing procedures.
  • Prepares, administers, and monitors district-wide waste management and recycling service contracts.
  • Prepares, maintains, and reviews all required reports, records, and documentation.
  • Assists in the development of PPEL projects and provides operational support to the Director of Operations on construction and renovation projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
