About The Position

The Facilities Technician oversees the physical infrastructure, environmental controls, security systems, and vendor relationships that allow the J&J Sustainability Solutions R&D facility to operate reliably, compliantly, and safely. The Facilities Technician role ensures lab spaces, utilities, and specialized equipment (e.g., depyrogenation ovens, fume hoods, drying chambers, ultrasonic washers, cleanrooms, RODI water system, HVAC/HEPA systems, compressed air systems etc.) meet operational needs, regulatory expectations, and adhere to R&D schedules.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Strong adherence to Good Documentation Practice (GDP).
  • Understanding of ISO structured quality systems, engineered materials, and fabrication methods.
  • Effective project management skills and the ability to complete projects on time.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Facilities Operations
  • Maintain day-to-day operation of lab spaces, office spaces, utilities and facility IT
  • Coordinate Preventive Maintenance schedules and Corrective Maintenance for critical systems (HVAC, compressed air, RODI, electrical)
  • Coordinate Calibration schedules for all R&D equipment
  • Monitor and manage spare-parts inventory and critical equipment redundancy to reduce repair lead times.
  • Plan and coordinate scheduled outages/maintenance windows to minimize impact on R&D timelines and communicate contingencies
  • Environmental Control
  • Oversee monitoring programs (Pressure Vessels, Legionella, RODI Water Maintenance) and respond to excursions
  • Manage Calibration and Preventive Maintenance of environmental monitoring instruments
  • Develop and maintain cleaning protocols of specialized areas (RODI room, RTA room)
  • Equipment & Asset Management
  • Assist in managing the lifecycle of equipment (installation, qualification support, Calibration, maintenance records, decommissioning)
  • Coordinate with TLCM and R&D Engineering staff for equipment specification, commissioning, and installation
  • Maintain an asset register with equipment specifications, Calibration and Preventative Maintenance schedules to ensure timely and sufficient completion of all equipment related LCM activities
  • Lead root-cause analysis for repeat equipment failures and implement corrective actions to improve reliability
  • Safety, Compliance & Regulatory support
  • Maintain facility-related documentation required for audits (maintenance logs, calibration records, validation/qualification documentation)
  • Conduct monthly facility inspections and ensure timely closure of corrective/preventive actions
  • Coordinate with EHS and Quality to update procedures after regulatory changes and support internal and external inspections
  • Quality System & Validation Support
  • Support Facility/Equipment Qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ), validation activities, and change control related to facility infrastructure and R&D equipment
  • Work with Quality/RC to supply technical data and evidence for regulatory submissions and inspections
  • Prepare and review facility-level SOPs to ensure facility protocols are up to date and accurate
  • Provide documentation and traceability for infrastructure changes; participate in design reviews
  • Utilities, Infrastructure & Engineering Coordination
  • Ensure reliable supply of critical utilities (electrical, RODI water, power backups)
  • Coordinate capital projects, renovations, and facility modifications with contractors and R&D and LCM engineering if applicable
  • Monitor utility performance metrics and lead initiatives to optimize energy efficiency and reduce utility-related costs
  • Vendor, Contract & Budget Management
  • Manage service contracts (HVAC, RODI, Waste, Calibration services), vendor selection, service level agreements (SLAs), and performance
  • Prepare and control facilities budgets and purchase requisitions
  • Negotiate service level agreements and ensure vendors meet qualification and compliance requirements
  • Track vendor performance metrics, audit third-party service providers, and implement corrective actions when needed
  • Emergency Preparedness & Business Continuity
  • Develop and exercise emergency response plans, disaster recovery procedures, and equipment redundancy plans to protect ongoing experiments and sensitive assets
  • Lead incident response for facility-related emergency events (power failure, HVAC failure, contamination events)
  • Maintain and test backup power systems and failover procedures; ensure readiness of critical spare equipment
  • Coordinate cross-functional live drills with site employees to ensure response plans are established, known, and effective
  • Security & Janitorial Management
  • Supervise security personnel and janitorial cleaning technicians
  • Aid in technical support of security systems
  • Develop training and checklists to ensure competency expectation
  • Facilitate regular cross-functional meetings to align priorities and escalate facility risks
  • Documentation & Continuous Improvement
  • Maintain clear SOPs, maintenance logs, permits, and vendor records
  • Engage and manage relevant root-cause analyses and cost-saving initiatives
