About the position

The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking a dedicated and reliable individual to join our Facilities Management team as a Facilities Maintenance Worker, CL1 (Custodial). This vital role is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, and welcoming environment for our diverse campus community, encompassing students, faculty, staff, and visitors. As a key member of our team, you will contribute directly to the overall health, safety, and aesthetic appeal of our campus facilities. Work Schedule: This is a full-time (40 hours per week), fiscal year position. A typical work schedule is Sunday through Thursday, 11:00 pm - 7:00 am. This is an essential position at the University of Maine at Farmington, in which winter hours are weather-dependent, and the employee will be required to report to work during inclement weather and administrative holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine cleaning tasks, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting all assigned areas (classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, hallways, etc.).
  • Empties trash and recycling receptacles, ensuring proper disposal and adherence to campus waste management protocols.
  • Performs deep cleaning tasks, such as floor stripping and waxing, carpet shampooing, and upholstery cleaning, as scheduled.
  • Assists with seasonal exterior maintenance tasks, including snow removal, ice control, and removing debris and litter.
  • Participates in essential employee storm coverage and snow and ice removal efforts, ensuring campus buildings and pathways remain safe and accessible during inclement weather.
  • Properly uses and maintains cleaning equipment and supplies, ensuring their safe and efficient operation.
  • Reports any equipment malfunctions or supply shortages to the supervisor.
  • Performs all tasks in accordance with established university policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor and provides courteous service to all members of the campus community.
  • Follows all safety procedures and wears all required safety equipment.
  • Works effectively as part of a team, collaborating with other facilities staff to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisors and colleagues.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to operate and maintain cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions, including cold and inclement weather.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous custodial experience preferred, ideally in an institutional or commercial setting.
