About The Position

The Facilities Maintenance Technician supports the safe, smooth, and efficient operation of all museum buildings, grounds, and equipment. This position ensures exhibits and public spaces are maintained to a high standard, responds to daily maintenance requests, and assists with preventive maintenance to protect the facility, collections, and visitor experience as assigned by the Director of Facilities. This position is to be well versed in USOPM daily functions, especially situations related to facility risk management, disaster preparedness, alarms, and accident protocols.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Professional experience and sophistication necessary to be successful in a leadership role in a complex and evolving organization.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and clean driving record.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in presenting ideas and concepts
  • Flexibility and the ability to cope with quickly changing priorities is required
  • Experience in working in a leadership role in garden management, preferably for a large public garden or cultural institution
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive experience and responsibility in general building maintenance or a similar trade (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or facilities).
  • Basic knowledge of building systems, tools, and safety procedures.
  • Basic painting and carpentry skills.
  • Very strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including MS Office suite products.
  • Must work periodic evenings and weekends and a flexible schedule.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications in HVAC, electrical, or other trades.
  • Experience working in a museum, cultural institution, or public facility.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and mechanical components.
  • Conduct repairs to walls, flooring, doors, hardware, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment used for exhibits and public programs.
  • Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance across facility systems and equipment.
  • Assist with exhibit installation, deinstallation, and routine exhibit upkeep.
  • Support museum events by preparing spaces, setting up equipment, and addressing maintenance needs during events.
  • Ensure galleries, public areas, restrooms, and offices are clean, safe, and in working order.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures to protect staff, visitors, and collections.
  • Identify and report safety hazards; correct issues when possible.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors as directed.
  • Provide excellent customer service to staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Work closely with other departments to address facilities usage for special events, etc.
  • Maintain equipment; keep in good repair and ensure safety of tools and equipment
  • Work closely with outsourced staff, providing scheduling information
