This recruitment will be used to establish an 18-month eligibility list to fill current and future vacancies in the Tucson area. Under general direction, performs skilled work of average to considerable difficulty in the performance of building maintenance including the fields of electrical; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); carpentry; plumbing, etc; and performs related duties as assigned. This is a competitive classification. Must successfully complete the examination process. Written Examination = 100% weight.

  • Identifies and corrects building and equipment problems by performing carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and HVAC work to maintain buildings and equipment in safe condition.
  • Repairs, modifies, constructs, fabricates, installs, and maintains building structures and equipment.
  • Replaces or updates inoperable or old building materials and appliances.
  • Inspects facilities, equipment, systems, and work of vendors.
  • Repairs, replaces, or installs plumbing systems and components.
  • Documents work and purchase orders, travel claims, bids and material lists.
  • Orders and stocks building supplies, materials, and parts.
  • Obtains telephone/written estimates and quotes of materials and equipment needed for repairs.
  • Communicates orally and in writing to notify supervisor and user groups of conditions of building and equipment.
  • Removes, relocates, repairs, installs and tests electrical equipment.
  • Paints various structures and equipment.
  • Recommends building modifications to improve or alter existing facilities.
  • Removes blockages to restroom/kitchen facilities.
  • Plans and schedules corrective action and preventive maintenance.
  • Assesses emergency lighting needs and equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains wood and metal windows, doors, locks, and closures.
  • Hangs, patches, textures, and paints sheetrock and drywall.
  • Oversees vendors and contractors.
  • Provides technical expertise to facilities personnel and outside contractors.
  • Analyzes electrical circuits, wiring diagrams, and drawings.
  • Provides direction, guidance, and instruction to Department personnel.
  • Installs conduits and wires to provide power for employees.
  • Installs vinyl composite and ceramic tile.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on UPS systems, generators, and air compressors.
  • Prepares reports of inspections and labor and material estimates.
  • Reconfigures, installs, positions, and remounts modular offices and space.
  • Repairs, modifies, and replaces damaged or missing parts to sheet metal fixtures.
  • Replaces and repairs ceiling tiles and ceiling grid systems.
  • Installs pipes for high-pressure air systems.
  • Erects indoor modular power and telecommunication poles.
  • Installs signage on buildings and fences.
  • Installs, repairs, or replaces appliances.
  • Welds various types of metal.
  • Builds, repairs, and modifies office furniture.
  • Assesses critical loads of power requirements.
  • Adjusts and calibrates thermostats, pneumatic controls, HVAC, and electric energy management systems.
  • Trains co-workers to perform preventive maintenance and repair work.
  • Performs general maintenance work.
  • Serves as acting supervisor in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Remains current on job-specific expertise through various sources.
  • Supervises and monitors Arizona Department of Correction (ADC) inmates.
  • Requires three (3) years as a Facilities Maintenance Worker; OR three (3) years as a building maintenance technician or construction worker.
  • Experience performing work in at least three of the following areas: basic plumbing, electrical, painting, carpentry, and/or HVAC work.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's license at the time of employment.
