About The Position

This position is for a Facilities HVAC technician who is under minimal supervision. Lead lower-level staff in examining facilities and evaluating elements. Lead lower-level staff in development of procedures, repair, maintenance, inspections and work instructions for operation of equipment. May serve as a resource on varied tasks. Site location is Department of Energy, Washington, DC As a Facilities HVAC Technician, you will be primarily responsible for working with HVAC Field Technicians in the installation and repair of environmental control systems, utilizing knowledge of refrigeration theory, control systems, pipe fitting, and structural layouts. You will perform scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance, inspections, site surveys, and service requests including repairs, replacement, and modifications of equipment or systems as needed or requested by customers. Ensure all work is performed in accordance with NORESCO and customers’ Environmental, Health, and Safety policies. Coordinate with supervisors, field technicians, and customers to thoroughly understand the requirements of the job, examine building layouts, the equipment, and review all contract requirements. Represent the company by serving as the direct customer contact; responsible for servicing products and equipment at assigned project/s, ensuring customer satisfaction by identifying, analyzing, diagnosing, and repairing equipment and systems. Inspect air-conditioning units to ensure efficient operation. Perform regularly scheduled maintenance on heating and cooling units. Diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions. Install, replace, or repair equipment; calibrate thermostatic controls. Install new heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems; repair and replace damaged or worn heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning components and equipment; repair or replace low and high-pressure liquid lines. Adjust and maintain internal electrical and electronic control systems, clean coils, blowers, check motors, and belt tensions. Assemble and install metal ductwork. Maintain the chilled and hot water supply systems. Assist in planning and designing new installations of heating and air-conditioning systems. Communicate technical information to technical and non-technical people. Meet with customer upon arrival and before leaving the assigned work site. Meet regularly with customer and NORESCO site personnel to ensure awareness of any operational problems. Keep customer informed regarding the nature of services provided, any outstanding issues, and recommend system enhancements, upgrades, and or repairs. Promptly respond to customer service calls (emergency, on-site, and remotely phone/on-line). Display teamwork and dedication to the customer needs by maintaining flexibility to on call, overtime, and weekends work as the business requires, including overnight stays. Work closely with NORESCO’s Measurement and Verification (M&V) group to ensure savings guarantees are met. Track changes to customer facilities that may affect the performance of the installed energy conservation measures (ECMs) and work with M&V engineers to develop non-routine adjustments to baseline and/or post-installation energy usage. Analyze energy trend data to detect problems with the system’s operation. Diagnose and repair electric and electronic control system malfunctions. Test and write modifications utilizing the installed control systems software.

Requirements

  • US citizen
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of experience in HVAC
  • EPA Universal refrigerant certification
  • Must be able to pass State, Federal or site background checks and a drug screen
  • Valid driver’s license required for job-related driving, with no major violations in the past 5 years
  • Ability to physically perform demanding tasks, including regular use of hands, fingers, walking, stooping, and kneeling
  • Must be capable of lifting and/or moving up to 10 lbs regularly, 50 lbs frequently, and more than 50 lbs occasionally
  • Able to work 9:30 am to 6:00 pm shift

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree (A.S.) in HVAC or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school with a certificate in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  • HVAC license.
  • Candidate should live within 1 hour of the job site.
  • Ability to work alone.
  • Ability to read and understand service contracts.
  • Principles and practices of Heating, Venting, Air Conditioning (HVAC) maintenance and repair; hazard and safety practices common to the trade.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC controls and safety devices; appropriate Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) / chemical usages; tools of the trade; materials and refrigerant recovery equipment and procedures used in installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC systems.
  • Mechanical/electrical aptitude (ability to troubleshoot, restore, and maintain a wide variety of equipment).
  • Knowledge and practical experience troubleshooting Direct Digital Controls (DDC) systems and their electrical interfaces with commercial mechanical equipment.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical blueprints.
  • Good understanding and experience with the mechanical and electrical systems of commercial buildings.
  • Practical knowledge and experience with controls calibration and testing tools.
  • Experience with water chemistry applications and control.
  • Practical knowledge of power and steam generation systems.
  • Familiarity with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • OSHA 30 certification (or ability to earn certification after hiring).
  • Practical knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to follow directions and perform work under the direction of the operations and maintenance supervisor.
  • Knowledge of chillers and chilled water systems, pumps, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Variable Air Volume units (VAVs), pneumatics and air compressors, and steam trap operations and maintenance.
