The Facilities Engineer will be the steward of one of the most advanced, sustainable, and innovative buildings in the world. You will lead predictive and preventative maintenance programs, oversee high-performance building systems including HVAC, MEP, geothermal, solar, and onsite wastewater treatment, while ensuring everything operates at peak efficiency. Reporting to the Director of Facilities, Grounds, and Sustainability, you will help shape the operational heartbeat of a landmark cultural institution.

Requirements

  • Passion for sustainability, conservation, and innovation in building operations.
  • Expertise in commercial building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, geothermal, solar, and water treatment.
  • Experience with predictive and preventative maintenance programs, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and performance monitoring.
  • Familiarity with or eagerness to learn LEED, SITES, and Living Building Challenge (LBC) requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to lead, train, and inspire a team.
  • Experience leading maintenance teams, contractors, and vendors with a focus on operational excellence, safety, and environmental responsibility.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
  • An engineering degree combined with engineering-level duties or a professional engineering (PE) license preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in building operations or engineering, with 2 or more years in a leadership role required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in diverse indoor and outdoor conditions.
  • Comfortable working at heights, in mechanical spaces, and in variable temperatures.
  • Available for after-hours emergencies and occasional weekend or holiday work.
  • Must be able to distinguish between wire and component colors when performing electrical maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • This is a full-time, exempt position working onsite at the TRPL in Medora, ND.
  • Must reside within a reasonable distance of Medora, ND (within 60 miles or less than a one-hour drive).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with renewable energy, advanced HVAC controls, and water treatment/reuse systems strongly preferred.
  • Experience with OSHA compliance & regulations, maintaining a safe work environment through regular inspections, hazard mitigation, and safety training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day operation and optimization of all building systems to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Implement and manage predictive and preventative maintenance programs to maximize system life and performance.
  • Monitor building performance data and adjust systems to maintain optimal comfort and sustainability targets.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize the Building Automation System (BAS) to ensure efficient operation of HVAC, lighting, and other integrated systems, maintaining optimal building performance and occupant comfort.
  • Operate and fine-tune renewable energy systems including geothermal and solar arrays.
  • Manage onsite water systems, including wastewater treatment.
  • Work with the sustainability team to track and improve performance toward LEED Platinum, SITES Platinum, and LBC Full Living goals.
  • Supervise engineering staff, contractors, and service vendors.
  • Provide hands-on training in advanced systems and sustainable operations.
  • Foster a culture of pride, safety, and care for the building as a living system.
  • Ensure all building systems comply with safety codes, environmental regulations, and certification standards.
  • Maintain life safety systems and emergency power readiness.
  • Keep detailed maintenance and performance records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
