About The Position

Performs skilled electrical repairs and troubleshooting / maintenance of electrical equipment and facilities at all Port Houston locations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required
  • 4+ years electrician experience required
  • Knowledge of relevant electrical codes such as the National Electrical code
  • Knowledge of basic electronic troubleshooting and repairs
  • Knowledge of control circuits, DC and AC motor maintenance, and power distribution
  • Knowledge of electrical controls and circuits installed on Port Houston equipment
  • Ample knowledge of electricity, electrical systems and equipment
  • Knowledge of safety precautions necessary to deal with occupational hazards
  • General working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to obtain State of Texas Electrician’s license
  • Ability to work with written or oral directions
  • Ability to climb and be comfortable at heights
  • Ability to operate forklift, if needed
  • A current, valid Texas driver's license is required
  • A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment

Nice To Haves

  • Electrician Journeyman License preferred
  • Knowledge of programmable logic controller and variable frequency drive
  • Knowledge of medium and high voltage switch gear is desired

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose problems or recurring malfunctions; choose the course of action and repair or troubleshoot techniques to diagnose problems
  • Provide inventory control for stock level of repair parts
  • Maintain routine records related to work performed and material
  • Diagnose electrical or mechanical problems by the use of appropriate equipment and tools such as voltmeters and other tools common to the trade
  • Ensure safety and environmental procedures are exercised during the performance of daily activities
  • Install electrical controls and circuits for a variety of electrical equipment such as lighting systems, motors, and control cabinets
  • Make modifications to existing or add-on facilities by installing computer cables and terminals, lighting, and lighting controls, convenience outlets and other electrical equipment
  • Maintain area lighting for parking lots, wharves, transit sheds; perform routine maintenance on electrical substations; maintain cables, antennas, clearance lights and cathodic protection system
  • Troubleshoot electrical malfunctions and repairs or replaces worn, defective or damaged equipment, using appropriate equipment and tools such as multi meters, conduit benders and other tools common to the trade; interpret blueprints, sketches and drawings in installing and troubleshooting electrical equipment
  • Estimate and obtain supplies needed for electrical work assignments
  • Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hours
  • Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisor
