About The Position

The Campus Rec Student Worker is responsible for performing operational tasks for Campus Recreation programs and facilities. They will provide excellent customer service, maintain facility and asset cleanliness, ensure that all policies are followed by guests and participants, and ensure all safety measures are being implemented. Duties and Responsibilities: (including, but not limited to) 1. Primary function of this position is to perform routine and as-needed Trail maintenance including debris removal, trimming tree and brush back, erosion control, repair of bridges/wooden features on trails and other routine trail-maintenance activities. 2. Performs maintenance on east campus disc golf and Hydaway disc golf course, duties including weed control, trimming, leaf blowing, small repairs, erosion control and other related activities. 3. Maintain the cleanliness of Campus Rec facilities grounds by picking up litter, brush and tree deadfall. Additionally, sweeping patios, walks and steps and emptying trash/recycling barrels. 4. Digs trenches and excavates soil for trail maintenance and other tasks using picks and shovels or related equipment. Hauls or spreads soil, gravel, sand, mulch, or related materials using wheelbarrows and rakes. 5. Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while operating Grounds related equipment including but not limited to; protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, steel-toed boots, respirators/ masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen. 6. Operates light-duty vehicles, weed eaters, hedger, rakes, shovels, blowers, sprayers, small hand-held tools and any other equipment associated with trail and outdoor facility maintenance. 7. Responsible for proper and safe use and maintenance of all equipment, tools, and chemicals related to the appropriate tasks. 8. Attend all required Campus Recreation trainings and meetings. 9. Perform all other tasks assigned by the Facilities Coordinator to assist with Campus Recreation operations and programming. 10. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission. Qualifications and Credentials: Minimum Qualifications Current Liberty University student Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification Ability to work up to 18 hours per week Availability to work a variety of different shifts (weekends, early morning, afternoon, late night) Preferred Qualifications Leave No Trace training or certification Experience or training in Trail Building and Maintenance Knowledge of and/or experience in landscaping, horticulture, or related fields Experience in a customer service position ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB Communication and Comprehension Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information. Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner. Problem Solving Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature. Physical and Sensory Abilities Frequently required to sit or stand in one location for extended periods to perform tasks assigned to varying positions. Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally. Frequently required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move around the facility Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business. Regularly lift 40 or fewer pounds WORKING CONDITIONS Work Environment The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is split between two climate-controlled fitness facility settings. Both areas are well lit and the noise level is moderate. Driving Requirements If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel. Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee’s position.
