About The Position

The Facilities and Grounds Worker helps maintain the buildings, grounds, and gardens at CCE of Schenectady County’s Sustainable Living Center, supporting programs that promote community education, gardening, and sustainable living. This hands-on role includes groundskeeping, cleaning, basic building repairs, equipment maintenance, snow removal, and supporting garden upkeep with staff and volunteers. The position also helps monitor facility conditions and address maintenance and safety needs. Work includes both indoor and outdoor tasks in a variety of weather conditions. This position is primarily part-time and seasonal (March–November), with the possibility of reduced hours during the winter months.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and at least 1 year of related experience.
  • Knowledge of building cleaning, groundskeeping, maintenance, and basic repairs.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, and snow blowers.
  • Ability to identify and address facility and safety issues.
  • Basic knowledge of building systems (e.g., plumbing, mechanicals).
  • Ability to meet regular travel requirements associated with this position.
  • A valid NYS driver's license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for agency insurance coverage are required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends (e.g., for garbage removal, snow removal).
  • Ability to read instructions, write simple reports, and communicate positively with staff, volunteers, city officials, and others.
  • Basic computer skills (email, calendar, internet-based systems).
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks with supervisor guidance.
  • Ability to frequently work in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability frequently lift, move, or transport materials, landscaping waste, etc.
  • Ability to constantly perform grounds keeping and maintenance tasks including by frequently positioning self (for example, pulling, bending, reaching, touching, kneeling, using hands to feel/reach, climbing stairs and ladders).
  • This position frequently operates equipment like lawn mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, shovels, snow blowers etc.
  • The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate and loud when using equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving and/ vibrating mechanical parts.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required depending on the task, for example ear protection when using loud equipment, eye protection, gloves, or other PPE as situations arise.

Responsibilities

  • Help manage the Sustainable Living Center facilities with guidance from supervisors.
  • Report any problems quickly and suggest possible solutions.
  • Help with maintenance plans and records for buildings, equipment, and grounds, including seasonal tasks, fire extinguisher checks, winterizing buildings and equipment, and emergency preparedness.
  • Help ensure the facilities follow safety rules and maintain Safety Data Sheets.
  • Maintain grounds (mowing, trimming, yard waste removal) and support program staff and volunteers with garden upkeep.
  • Clean buildings, restrooms, classrooms; remove trash and recycling.
  • Ensure cleaning and facility supplies are stocked and maintained.
  • Maintain outdoor water access, hoses, and greenhouses; check for and repair damage.
  • Perform minor building maintenance and repairs (painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc.).
  • Maintain and repair grounds and gardening equipment and tools; keep manuals and maintenance records.
  • Clear snow and ice from sidewalks and entrances before building opening.
  • Perform pest management and address wildlife issues following county guidelines.
  • Coordinate with staff regarding youth participants who may assist with cleaning duties, Work with the City of Schenectady on facility and garden maintenance needs as assigned by the supervisor.
  • In cooperation with Supervisor jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
  • Aware of, and adheres to, established Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Schenectady County policies, procedures and Cornell Cooperative Extension Skills for Success.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the organization by performing all assigned duties in a professional, timely and accurate manner.
