About The Position

The Shop Lead Welder is a hands-on leadership role responsible for performing high-quality welding while guiding and supporting shop welders and fitters. This position ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to specifications. Lead Welder sets the standard for workmanship, productivity, and safety within the fabrication team. The ideal candidate is a collaborative teammate who learns quickly, asks thoughtful questions, and thrives in a fast-paced, fully-custom, shop environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Technical/trade certification preferred)
  • 3-5 years of fabrication experience
  • Advanced welding skills
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • Working knowledge of OSHA safety standards
  • Proven team player with clear and respectful communication skills
  • Curious and eager to learn new tools, processes and industry standards
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with the initiative to dig into issues and propose solutions
  • Capable of maintaining accurate project records, reports, and drawing packages
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple jobs at once

Responsibilities

  • Perform MIG, TIG, Stick, and/or Flux-Cored welding based on project requirements
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and welding symbols
  • Fabricate and assemble metal components according to specifications
  • Ensure weld quality meets structural and cosmetic standards
  • Conduct visual inspections and verify tolerances
  • Provide day-to-day guidance to welders and fabrication personnel
  • Assist in assigning tasks and prioritizing workflow
  • Train and mentor junior welders and laborers
  • Promote a team-oriented and accountable work environment
  • Lead by example in productivity, quality, and professionalism
  • Inspect welds and completed assemblies for accuracy and strength
  • Identify defects and coordinate corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with company standards and project specifications
  • Maintain documentation related to weld procedures and inspections
  • Enforce OSHA and company safety policies
  • Ensure proper PPE use and safe equipment operation
  • Participate in safety meetings and lead toolbox talks when needed
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas
  • Operate fabrication equipment (press brakes, saws, grinders, etc.)
  • Monitor welding machines and tools for proper function
  • Report equipment maintenance needs
