About The Position

The Eye Bank Technician plays a crucial role in the recovery, evaluation, preparation, and distribution of donated eye tissues for transplant and research purposes. This full-time position operates on a night shift schedule, primarily from Thursday to Sunday, and is dedicated to supporting the mission of restoring sight through corneal transplant and promoting eye, organ, and tissue donation.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in a science or healthcare related field or one-year healthcare experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • A working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
  • The ability to work flexible hours.
  • Experience reviewing medical records.

  • Familiarity and practice with aseptic technique.
  • EBAA Certified Eye Bank Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Perform precise, thorough, and expeditious recovery of corneal tissue from eye donors in the EBKY service area.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in an inspiring and constructive manner.
  • Adhere to all applicable policies and procedures pertaining to tissue recovery and preservation, ensuring compliance with EBAA medical standards and regulations.
  • Conduct quality evaluations of PRN Recovery Technicians, providing specific performance feedback.
  • Collect recovery performance data, review with the Tissue Recovery Manager, and report successes and challenges to leadership.
  • Collaborate with other staff to define ocular tissue needs in the service area and facilitate a team approach.
  • Promote EBKY goals, values, and responsibilities to donation partners in the community.
  • Assist in following up with donor hospitals, medical examiners, coroners, KODA, and funeral directors as needed.
  • Perform routine lab environmental maintenance according to policy and procedure.
  • Perform all general laboratory functions independently, including receiving, recording, and labeling recovered ocular tissue.
  • Perform corneal specular microscopy endothelial cell count analysis and associated data entry.
  • Perform aseptic processing and autologous serum eye drop processing as needed.
  • Process scleral tissue and perform other duties as assigned.
