About The Position

The Extreme Weather Editor at CNN will play a crucial role in shaping weather stories with a strong focus on US weather news. This position involves leading and managing the network's weather editorial during US overnight hours, ensuring consistent, multiplatform coverage of extreme weather events. The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with meteorologists and reporters to deliver accurate and engaging content about the climate crisis.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of digital editorial experience in extreme weather or climate.
• Degree in meteorology, climate science, or a related field preferred but not required.
• Passion for weather, climate, and science with deep knowledge of US weather.
• Proven track record of writing and editing fast-moving breaking news.
• Excellent weather and climate news judgment.
• Compelling pitching and headline instincts.
• Experience helping reporters and producers frame stories for a national audience.
• Some experience with weather data and visualizations.
• Perfect grasp of written and spoken English.
• Exceptional communication and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with digital live story formats.
• Familiarity with social media platforms for news dissemination.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the network's weather editorial during US overnight hours.
• Write, assign, and edit stories in the breaking news space, including urgent coverage of extreme weather events.
• Gather editorial and shape coverage plans for major extreme weather events across all network platforms.
• Write and edit daily stories and news features, ensuring accuracy and fairness.
• Develop distinctive story ideas and angles around complex weather and climate topics.
• Collaborate with visuals and video teams to enhance audience understanding of extreme weather impacts.
• Occasionally develop weather visuals for TV and digital using CNN's weather graphics platforms.
• Write and edit in various formats, including digital live stories and explanatory content.
