About The Position

The Extension Associate in Engagement in Science and Nature at Cornell University plays a pivotal role in leading youth and community engagement initiatives. The Extension Associate will work within the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Center for Engagement in Science and Nature, contributing to the Lab's mission of connecting people with nature and promoting ecological literacy.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in education, communication, natural resources, sociology or related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in education or community-based environmental justice work.
  • Track record in translating complex scientific topics into accessible educational experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust with partners and deliver positive impacts for underserved populations.
  • Proven history of managing projects, supervising staff, and raising funds.
  • Exemplary communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to write and speak publicly in English and Spanish.
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally as necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. preferred.
  • Experience developing and delivering professional development opportunities for educators.
  • Experience with community-based education and conservation projects.
  • Advanced training in DEI principles and practices.
  • Understanding of environmental justice frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the thought leader and team leader for Youth and Community Engagement for the Lab.
  • Develop and deliver innovative professional development opportunities for educators.
  • Co-develop conservation strategies with grassroots communities combining education and conservation action.
  • Identify and develop equitable partnerships to strengthen ecological literacy and restore biodiversity.
  • Manage a team and oversee a six-figure yearly budget, developing proposals and donor pitches.
  • Lead initiatives to make programming more accessible to underserved communities.
  • Publish extension materials and articles supporting innovation in STEM learning and environmental education.
  • Mentor undergraduates and extension staff.
