About The Position

Directs the work of a crew and participates in the cleaning, maintenance and minor construction of grounds, facilities and equipment. Develops estimates of materials and personnel needed for jobs; operates riding mowers, dump truck, hand tools, weed and trim equipment. Applies seed, herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and water using tractors and accessories. Trains employees to safely operate and maintain equipment; safety hazards include cutting blades, steep slopes, high-speed traffic, objects in grass, and toxic chemicals. Assists in building road barriers, salt boxes, sand boxes and other equipment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.)
  • Must have one year of experience in maintenance using tractors or other vehicles with auxiliary equipment and attachments
  • Must be licensed by the State of Ohio Department of Agriculture to use chemicals on vegetation and turf within 12 months of appointment and maintain said license as a condition of employment
  • Must possess a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) with a Tanker Endorsement at time of appointment, including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio as a term and condition of continued employment. Out of state residents must have equivalent license from their state of residence
  • Must have been permanently employed full-time by the City of Dayton for 6 consecutive months in the classification of Equipment Operator II, Equipment Operator III, Grounds Maintenance Worker, or Tree Servicer I and be in a current pay grade below 119 (Wage), 29 (Clerical), or equivalent
  • A background investigation is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position
  • Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees
