About The Position

The Experiential and Teaching Garden’s Internship is an opportunity, funded by the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Science Initiative to support students aspiring to work in museums and provide them with hands on experience in a museum setting with professionals in the field of horticulture. This will present the interns with opportunities to broaden their experience within the horticulture field and from experts in their field. The ideal candidate is proactive, highly organized, and comfortable working in a fast- paced, collaborative environment. This is a 8-10 week, full-time or part-time opportunity, perfect for someone who is interested in pursuing a career in botany or horticulture. Tentative Internship Dates: April 6, 2026 - May 29, 2026 S/he/they will demonstrate a background of working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach.

Requirements

  • Must be a current university student or recent graduate (1 year max).
  • Have some educational and/or practical experience in horticulture, botany, and/or landscape design/maintenance.
  • Experience with California Native plants
  • Candidates should enjoy working outdoors in a dynamic gardening atmosphere.
  • Should be able to operate light-powered equipment.
  • Should be able to stoop, bend, move between long distances in the gardens, and lift moderate and, occasionally, heavy loads.
  • Familiarity with the safe and proper use of hand tools and garden equipment.
  • Must be able to work independently without constant supervision or be able to work in teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish language skills highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Intern will organize and create records and labels for established Ranch plants, updating the map in GIS.
  • Harvesting of native plant seeds for future seed banking, including wildflowers and perennials plants.
  • Harvesting of plant material for propagation.
  • Overseeing propagation and seed starting of natives (to be used for Fall planting).
  • Assist in plant curation (for future plantings) and help troubleshoot interpretive signage throughout Ranch and Compost area.
  • Must adhere to written safety policy, following all precautions and directions in use of equipment and chemicals.
  • Intern will have the opportunity to shadow other Botanical team members.
  • Other duties as assigned and skills to learn:
  • Working with volunteers.
  • Weeding, mulching, watering.
  • Pruning.
  • Tool sharpening.
  • Participating in Internship programming led by the Internship Coordinator
  • Create and present a final project based on the work done during the 12 week internship immersing themselves in the following areas:
  • Ranch Garden.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned
