About The Position

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Experienced Substation Electrical Engineer for our Mount Laurel, NJ office. Be involved in projects with our Power & Energy Substation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges. Provides technical assistance and guidance for the due diligence, investigation, design, development, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, including either physical design or protection and control (P&C) engineering. Assist with the research, design, and development of substation physical infrastructure or protection and control systems, including equipment layouts, grounding, control buildings, power distribution, protection schemes, SCADA interfaces, and control systems across utility, industrial, transportation, and government projects. Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding material, installations, component, and construction specifications. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for substation design, safety, reliability, and functionality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology (or equivalent experience).
  • 3 to 5 years of utility substation relevant post‑education experience in an electrical engineering capacity.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with discipline‑specific design and analysis software (e.g., AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, MicroStation, Inventor).
  • Engineer in Training Certification or Professional Engineer License.
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data relating to substation physical components, major equipment specifications, protection/control requirements, procurement package development and pricing, IFR/IRC design review processes, and IEEE/NESC Standards/NERC reliability standards for substation design work.
  • Assist in reviewing third‑party substation design packages, construction drawings, P&C wiring diagrams, panel schedules, procurement lists, and project plans.
  • Perform professional electrical engineering work relating to the design of single lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, general arrangements, substation layouts, bus configuration, grounding grid design, and lightning protection, ensuring conformance with applicable rules, standards, and operating permits.
  • Develop electrical calculations for fault current, bus ratings, equipment sizing, cable sizing, voltage drop, grounding grid performance, lightning protection, AC/DC station service load analysis, and auxiliary power systems.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting for physical and P&C substation designs.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized substation engineering projects, including physical design packages and P&C design packages.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
