The new Neurology/Neurosurgery Care Unit (NNCU) located in the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, Tower B, 2 East, is now seeing patients! This unit features significant patient room upgrades, and care for a mixture of med/surg and stepdown patients. This comprehensive unit provides elevated care to some of OU Health's most complex patients, encouraging team-based care and easier access to services. Our unit focuses on all things Neuro! Our patient population includes diagnosis of strokes, seizures, brain mass, encephalopathy, neck and spinal surgery, and lumbar drains. This unit specializes in 24-7 epilepsy monitoring, where patients are being closely monitored and observed for any seizure activity. We will provide you the necessary tools in successfully performing a Yale swallow screening and becoming NIHSS certified (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification). OU Health has introduced a groundbreaking hybrid nursing model that integrates both virtual and in-person nursing teams, aimed at improving care coordination and bolstering the nursing workforce within the state's premier academic health system. In collaboration with Nexus Bedside a company renowned for its expertise in hybrid nursing solutions, OU Health's bedside nurses deliver direct patient care while receiving assistance from virtual nurses. These virtual nurses manage patient education, medication reviews, and care coordination, fostering a unified team dynamic. This innovative approach enables each nurse to concentrate on their clinical strengths while enhancing the overall support provided to patients.

Requirements

  • Education: Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Experience: 0-3 years of experience in patient care as a Registered Nurse for RN I; 3-5 years for RN II; 5+ years for RN III.
  • License/Certification/Registration: Current Registered Nurse License (RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact Registered Nurse (eNLC)). Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
  • For RN III: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required; Master's Degree in Nursing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Aligns behaviors with OU Health values and maintains nursing professional practice standards.
  • Assumes responsibility for an assigned patient or group of patients.
  • Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments, noting all changes in physician order on assigned patients.
  • Assists physician in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatment.
  • Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients, observes the physiological manifestations of patients, and intervenes when necessary.
  • Administers medication as prescribed.
  • Initiates, regulates and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products.
  • Delivers patient care safely and competently.
  • Resolves patient complaints in a timely manner in accordance with policy and in collaboration with support staff.
  • Informs patient and family of hospital procedures and shares care plan during the time of care and at the time of discharge.
  • Makes referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Fosters a growth mindset through seeking mentorship, remaining open to coaching and feedback, and maintaining professional certification(s)/licensure in order to perpetually develop and uphold the skills required for proficiency within the nursing profession.
  • Develops a professional career plan and establishes personal, performance goals in alignment with enterprise-wide metrics, frequently measuring progress with department leadership.
  • Fosters an inclusive workforce where individual differences are valued and maximized to achieve OU Health’s winning aspiration.
  • Delegates tasks to clinical support staff as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
