About The Position

As an Experienced Core Design Engineer in Richland, WA, you will be part of the proven team in the Fuel Design Business Line in the Fuel Business Unit. You will be responsible to prepare and apply nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulic and neutronics models for core design and plant safety analyses and be involved in the preparation of engineering documents (calculations, reports, functional requirements, Final Safety Analysis Reports, etc.) in support of emergent issues, fuel reloads, proposed changes in fuel designs or operating strategies and evaluate changes in analytical methods. You will be part of a cross-discipline team tasked with completing the fuel reload design and licensing safety analysis.

Requirements

  • Completion of a BS in Nuclear Engineering, or a related Engineering degree
  • At least 3 years of directly related experience
  • Good communication skills including the ability to comprehend and convey detailed technical data (meetings, email, presentations, and customer deliverables)
  • Ability to develop networks and maintain good interpersonal relationships
  • Working collaboratively within a team environment
  • Strong advanced problem identification and resolution skills
  • Display informal leadership characteristics
  • Questioning attitude and practices self-checking
  • Advanced level of Microsoft Office and business unit specific software tools (CAD, FEA, CFD, etc.) and computer programming skills

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with light water reactors and have performed multiple core designs in your career
  • Knowledge on how to control core physics parameters based on varying fuel assembly enrichment and poison
  • Display positive and effective team interaction skills and value positive peer relationships
  • Customer focus and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers

Responsibilities

  • Creating cross sections of various fuel assembly lattice designs to support one of the many light water reactors that Framatome is the fuel vendor for.
  • Designing new and shuffling old fuel assemblies in a pattern that leads to optimal energy requirements while maintaining safety parameters.
  • Calculating neutronics parameters, providing inputs for downstream analyses, and documenting the analyzed results.
  • Working with code developers to create new or revise existing codes and automation tools associated with core design.
  • Working with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure successful customer delivery.
  • Supporting first-of-a-kind core design studies to support new fuel product development or new customer requirements.
