Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated claims professional to join our team. This job investigates, evaluates, and determines the appropriate disposition of primarily commercial auto claims arising out of the Company's business. Claims may be either first or third party in nature and may potentially be in litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble facts, determine coverage, evaluate the amount of loss, and analyze legal liability.
  • Make payments in accordance with coverage, damage, and liability determination and perform other functions or duties to properly adjust the loss.
  • Become familiar with the auto provisions of our commercial insurance policies, endorsements, and forms and apply coverage analysis skills.
  • Learn and comply with the Company's claim handling procedures.
  • Continue to develop skills in claim negotiations and settlements.
  • Effectively meet the service needs to agents, insureds, and others.
  • Meet with people involved with commercial auto claims, sometimes outside of the office environment.
  • Obtain and maintain appropriate adjuster's license(s) as required.
  • Complete relevant continuing education programs as required.
  • Handle claims activities and investigations by phone, mail, and occasional on-site investigations.
  • Use computer-based information for reference; enter information into computer systems; develop specialized skills, including but not limited to property estimating, auto estimating, and use of computer-based programs as tools.
  • Work closely with Underwriting to communicate issues potentially affecting policy rating or eligibility.
  • Maintain punctual attendance according to an assigned work schedule at a Company approved work location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or direct equivalent experience.
  • Garage/dealership industry experience preferred.
  • Ability to read, interpret and react to documents such as contracts, insurance policies, procedure manuals, and legal documents.
  • Ability to assemble information, develop opinions, and clearly express decisions using sound reasoning and judgment.
  • Ability to write reports and compose correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate, both oral and written formats, in a polite, clear, concise, and accurate way.
  • Ability to demonstrate good problem-solving interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to accurately deal with mathematics, including geometry (area and volume) and understanding of personal and business finance documents.
  • Able to effectively deal with a diverse group of individuals and manage varied factual circumstances.
  • Ability to organize assigned work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and data security.
  • Ability to maintain a professional image.
  • Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge with insurance policy review and sound organization.
