About The Position

PRN exercise specialist Department: 37000 Advocate Condell Medical Center - Cardiac Rehabilitation Status: Part time Benefits Eligible: No Hours Per Week: 0 Schedule Details/Additional Information: Days, Monday - Friday 8- and 12-hour shifts- as needed only. This is not a benefit eligible position. Pay Range $25.30 - $37.95 This position is as needed/per diem at Advocate Condell Medical.

Requirements

BS in Sports Medicine, Adult Fitness or Exercise Physiology.
Minimum 1 year relevant experience.
Able to identify cardiac arrhythmias and intervene when necessary.
Must have knowledge of prevention and progression of heart and pulmonary disease in the adult client.
This position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of the adult patient, and look for the signs of normal aging.
Excellent communication skills.
Familiarity to exercise equipment, cardiac monitors and pulse oximetry.
Current BLS and ACLS within 3-6 months
Special Characteristics: Willingness to keep current in new concepts in cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation.
Possess an attitude that reflects assertiveness and motivation.
Ability to offer ideas and projects for client motivation.
Communicates effectively and works well with other hospital associates and physicians.
Must be able to navigate between and around equipment.
Must be able to respond to emergencies quickly and efficiently.
Must be able to adequately hear client's response over the noise of the exercise equipment.
This position can recognize needs and behaviors of the following groups: Adolescent, Adults and Geriatric. Evidence of this can be shown by recognizing levels of development and modifying approach and exhibiting communication skills necessary to interpret age specific responses.
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.
Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Prior experience with various age groups is preferred.

Responsibilities

Conducting Exercise Sessions: 1)Educate and motivate patients towards positive lifestyle habits including weight management, effective exercise and smoking cessation.
Lead patients in appropriate warm up and cool down exercise activity.
Monitor the "Target Heart Rate" utilizing ECG telemetry equipment.
Update the exercise prescription accordingly based on individual conditioning responses.
Coach patients on appropriate and individualized methods of aerobic activity.
Prepares and presents educational classes to the exercise participants as well as to the community.
Update patient's progress in ITP's, progress report and discharge summary.
Assurance of appropriate, safe, and effective exercise.
Comply with the policies and procedures of the Cardiopulmonary Rehab Department and hospital.
Perform initial patient interviews and evaluations of the client and family to help implement a plan of care to meet physical, psychological, and social needs.
Observe and assess client's condition and implement appropriate interventions. Must have knowledge of progression of heart disease in the adult cardiac patient.
Maintain confidentiality of the client's information.
Collaborate with RN and exercise physiologist in plan of care development.
Telemetry monitoring - evaluation and treatment as necessary.
Assisting clients during the session with equipment rotation, workloads and set up. To be able to perform assessment, exercise prescription, education to the pulmonary rehab patients.
Perform patient orientation and 6 minute walk (pre or post)
Conduct exercise session and provide a safe environment
Update care plans, progress reports and discharge summary.
Provide education classes to the pulmonary patients Phase 1 (inpatient)
Provide Education to all Cardiovascular (PCI,MI,OHS) patients related to their disease process.
Document in patient records the education and activity that will populate in the discharge record.
Initiate early ambulation of the post op open heart patient.
Assure that phase one charges are reconciled and accurate.
Provide education materials to all patients that qualify for the Pulmonary Rehab program.
Participate in professional development and contribution to CQI atmosphere:
Provides pertinent information and feedback to other health care team members.
Participates in CQI monitoring program.
Maintain current CPR and ACLS per department policy and procedure
Seeks out improvement opportunities for self and department.
Attends in-services and continuing education programs appropriate to needs and goals.
Stay current with mandatory education and competencies.
Report patient safety events and near misses in timely fashion
Adhere to all behavioral and procedural patient safety practices
Promote culture of safety through identifying threats to patient safety and intervening to prevent patient harm
Communicate openly and promote team work
Report intimidating behavior and other threats to patient safety promptly
