About the position

We are looking for an Executive Underwriter in Los Angeles or San Francisco for our property line of business. When it comes to underwriting insurance products for well-known famous sports venues, sports/entertainment facilities, major airlines, retail/wholesale companies, banks and manufacturers, we do it all! Reporting to the Regional Property Leader - West, this position will take prime responsibility for underwriting profitable new and renewal business to meet LoB(s) targets in accordance with underwriting guidelines and underwriting authority. Negotiate price and terms and conditions. Training and development of team and referral point for senior underwriters. Develop and maintain strong relationships with producers and clients in partnership with Market Management. Ownership of large/key accounts and clients including negotiation of participation, pricing and terms and conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to development and execution of regional Underwriting strategy for LoB regionally.
  • Training, developing and coaching of experienced staff (including Senior Underwriters).
  • Manage complex referrals from underwriters and spokes and re-underwrite complex business as appropriate.
  • Delegate work as appropriate.
  • Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet top and bottom-line targets (local and/or regional).
  • Negotiate price and terms and conditions with producers.
  • Proactively manage capacity.
  • Underwrite and evaluate Natural Catastrophe Accumulation, ensuring an understanding of catastrophe modelling and interpretation of scenarios (for relevant LoBs).
  • Underwrite International Insurance Programs (for relevant LoBs).
  • Positively represent AzC externally to the market.
  • Proactively drive involvement of functional areas in Underwriting process, including e.g., MMC, ARC, Claims, Operations.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key producers and clients and other relevant stakeholders (e.g., risk managers).
  • Ensure accurate policy documentation issued to producers (where AzC responsibility to do so) or producers has issued documentation (where producer responsibility).
  • File maintenance - ensure file is established (whether electronic or paper) and maintained for each risk and transaction handled.
  • Proactively support completion of policy administration and credit control processes.
  • Proactively support acquisition of new business and retention of existing business (including client and producer negotiations where necessary).
  • Proactively liaise with MMC on market management initiatives.
  • Participate/contribute to key projects.
  • Training and development of underwriters in lob, e.g., Associate Underwriters and Underwriters.
  • Referral point for other underwriters.
  • Participate in cross regional activities as required/requested.

Requirements

  • A minimum 7 years' proven track record in underwriting profitable Property business with greater than 7 years' property experience.
  • Experience underwriting property insurance products such as large commercial property risks, manufacturing, real estate, retail, public entity, and healthcare facilities.
  • In depth understanding of lob products, portfolio, regional/local insurance markets and competitor landscape.
  • Demonstrable, established relationships with brokers at the peer group level and well established within local market.
  • Preferably a bachelor's degree in insurance, Risk Management, Finance, Economics, or Business Administration.
  • Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards relevant to LoB.
  • Manage the underwriting books.
  • Analyze trends and scenario plans from which portfolio strategies can be developed and implemented.
  • Ability to analyze highly complex data from multiple sources, in detail; identify and resolves issues before they transpire.
