About The Position

Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group (BMAG) is seeking a strategic thinker for the role of Underwriter. This position involves independently underwriting complex middle market risks across multiple lines of business, including Property, General Liability, Auto, Umbrella, and Workers’ Compensation, with a focus on profitability and alignment with underwriting appetite. The successful candidate will apply advanced risk assessment techniques and industry knowledge to evaluate exposures, structure coverage solutions, and make sound underwriting decisions. Collaboration with internal partners such as Loss Control, Claims, and Actuarial is essential to incorporate technical insights into account-level strategies. The role also requires maintaining a high standard of underwriting discipline, documentation, and compliance with regulatory and internal guidelines. Additionally, the Underwriter will monitor market trends, emerging risks, and competitive positioning to inform underwriting approaches and contribute to product refinement. Serving as a technical resource to peers and contributing to continuous improvement of underwriting practices through knowledge sharing and feedback is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent industry experience and training.
  • 7+ years of commercial lines sales and underwriting experience.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills and effective communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license for travel.
  • Strong technical acumen in commercial insurance sales and underwriting.
  • Solid understanding of agency prospecting, planning, incentives, and performance accountability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge and familiarity with assigned territory, agencies, and competitors.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced professional insurance designations (CPCU, CIC, etc.) preferred.
  • Ability to travel as needed within the territory; overnight stays may be occasional.

Responsibilities

  • Independently underwrite complex middle market risks across multiple lines of business.
  • Apply advanced risk assessment techniques and industry knowledge to evaluate exposures.
  • Collaborate with internal partners such as Loss Control, Claims, and Actuarial.
  • Maintain a high standard of underwriting discipline, documentation, and compliance.
  • Monitor market trends, emerging risks, and competitive positioning.
  • Serve as a technical resource to peers and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Oversee performance of a multi-regional or national book of business.
  • Analyze portfolio trends and emerging risks to inform strategic decisions.
  • Collaborate with actuarial, finance, and product teams to develop pricing strategies.
  • Lead quarterly business reviews and contribute to enterprise planning.
  • Partner closely with BMAG and other WRB companies to share market intelligence.
  • Actively engage with agents and brokers to drive new business production.
  • Conduct in-person and virtual sales calls.
  • Identify and pursue cross-sell and up-sell opportunities.
  • Deliver customized solutions by leveraging product knowledge.
  • Participate in industry events, agency meetings, and client presentations.
  • Track and analyze producer performance to inform territory strategies.
