The Judicial Division of the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission is seeking an exceptional Executive Judicial Assistant to serve as the primary administrative and legal support professional to the Chairman. This is a mission-critical role at the heart of the Commission’s judicial decision-making process. The Executive Judicial Assistant to the Chairman serves as the primary administrative and legal support professional within the Chairman’s judicial office. This position assists with the judicial processing of docketed Requests for Review and other assigned matters, including reviewing and organizing case materials, drafting opinion templates, coordinating circulation of Review opinions, monitoring deadlines, and ensuring timely issuance of finalized decisions in accordance with Commission policy. The role independently manages a high volume of complex administrative and legal tasks, including drafting and proofreading judicial documents, verifying citations and compensation data, maintaining electronic and physical case files, scheduling hearings and meetings, coordinating travel, and responding to inquiries with discretion and professionalism. The Executive Judicial Assistant must exercise sound judgment, maintain strict confidentiality, and adhere to all ethical standards governing judicial offices. This position operates in a fast-paced judicial environment that requires exceptional accuracy, discretion, and independent judgment. The workload is substantial and detail-intensive, with strict deadlines and same-day issuance requirements for judicial opinions and orders. The successful candidate must be comfortable managing complex legal materials, prioritizing multiple assignments simultaneously, and working with limited supervision while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. About the Judicial Division The Judicial Division of the Commission is made up of the Commissioners, the Chief Deputy Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioners, the Clerk's Office, all Regional Offices, the Alternative Dispute Resolution Department (ADR), and the Petition & Order-Judicial Compliance Department (P & O). The Judicial Division provides information about the Act, mediates or adjudicates disputed claims, conducts hearings, and issues timely written opinions adjudicating disputes and appeals. The Division’s primary objective is to hear and decide disputed claims and issues arising under the Act in a prompt, fair and impartial manner, affording due process to all litigants. Contested or controverted workers' compensation claims are referred to the Judicial Division for adjudication. Each contested claim is docketed for hearing, either for an evidentiary hearing or for a decision on the record. All areas of the state are served by a Deputy Commissioner or Commissioner at least once a month. Foreign language interpreters are provided at evidentiary hearings by the Commission at no cost for non-English speaking litigants and witnesses. The Act requires written decisions in each case. VWC Compensation Structure Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission is an independent agency which allows us to have a more competitive and unique pay structure. This position is a pay grade 8 based on a 14 grade pay structure. Our positions are not classified under DHRM's pay bands. Telework Structure Our agency is currently using a hybrid model for teleworking. Our positions at this time are not 100% teleworking. All candidates would be expected to report to our Headquarters/Regional Office as requested. Telework scheduling is at the discretion of the Manager based on the business needs of the department. Upon hire, candidates should expect to have all training and orientation conducted at the Headquarters Office. Requirements

  • Ability to understand legal and ethical concepts and adhere to appropriate standards required
  • Experience providing excellent customer service to attorneys, doctors, or other professionals; employees; and the public
  • Must have strong, effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills including proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with attention to detail; organize, coordinate, and prioritize assignments; and meet deadline.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a paralegal or legal assistant and/or experience performing legal research preferred
