About the position

Store to Door is a unique, volunteer-powered nonprofit that supports independent living for homebound seniors and adults living with disabilities across the Portland Metro area. While its weekly grocery deliveries address critical food access, the organization's deeper impact is rooted in nourishment, connection, and dignity. Founded in 1989 by neighbors responding to a grassroots need, Store to Door has grown into a vital community service reaching hundreds of clients each week. Through personal relationships, reliable service, and unwavering community support, Store to Door helps clients age with dignity in the setting of their choice, while also fostering a more equitable and connected community for all. The organization is seeking a strategic and compassionate Executive Director to ensure its long-term sustainability, mission alignment, and operational resilience. This leader will guide Store to Door through a changing landscape-strengthening systems, deepening relationships, and championing its people-centered mission at every level.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Board of Directors to lead and strengthen the organization's performance and impact.
  • Advance the goals of the strategic plan with a focus on long-term sustainability, community partnerships, mission communication, and diversified fundraising.
  • Ensure legal, safe, and ethical operations across all areas of the organization.
  • Provide transparent and timely financial and operational reporting to support strong Board governance.
  • Support Board development by identifying, recruiting, and orienting new members to ensure diverse perspectives and robust engagement.
  • Lead, supervise, and support the management team, ensuring clarity in roles and collaborative operations.
  • Promote a team-oriented, inclusive, and joyful organizational culture grounded in accountability and continuous learning.
  • Oversee human resources functions including equitable hiring, training, mentorship, supervision, evaluation, and benefits administration.
  • Champion a workplace that values staff well-being, engagement, and professional growth.
  • Lead annual and multi-year budgeting processes in partnership with staff and Board.
  • Ensure effective systems for financial operations, controls, and reporting.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable laws, contracts, and standards.
  • Support the sustainability of facilities and technology to meet organizational needs.
  • Lead a comprehensive development strategy to grow diverse funding sources, including individual donors, foundations, businesses, and public grants.
  • Cultivate and steward strong relationships with funders and philanthropic partners.
  • Collaborate with staff and Board to drive fundraising events, campaigns, and donor engagement efforts.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality, client-centered programs that fulfill the mission.
  • Oversee program planning, implementation, and evaluation to ensure effectiveness, equity, and alignment with community needs.
  • Support innovation and sustainability as the organization evolves.
  • Represent Store to Door to policy makers, partners, funders, and community members.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, advocacy groups, service providers, and civic organizations.
  • Represent Store to Door in public forums and collaborative initiatives to raise awareness and advance its mission.

Requirements

  • Visionary leadership with a demonstrated ability to drive strategy, change, and results.
  • Nonprofit leadership experience, preferably with services supporting older adults or related populations.
  • Strong record of fundraising across donor types and grant sources.
  • Proven success in building partnerships and engaging community stakeholders.
  • Experience in team leadership, HR oversight, and fostering equitable workplace culture.
  • Financial and operational management skills, including budgeting and compliance.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a commitment to collaborative leadership.
