About The Position

The Chestnut Street Family YMCA, established in 1892, is dedicated to addressing the critical needs of West Louisville community members. The organization aims to help residents achieve their fullest potential by fostering community cohesion, enhancing academic outcomes, and promoting health and well-being. The Executive Director will be responsible for leading all facets of this YMCA, with a primary focus on cultivating and sustaining strong relationships with community leaders and advocates. Key objectives for this role include significantly improving the community's health and well-being and establishing the YMCA as a pivotal entity in resolving community challenges within West Louisville. This area comprises approximately 92,000 residents, with a demographic breakdown of 68% African-American and 28% Caucasian, and a median income of $25,000, alongside numerous office and manufacturing worksites. The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with a demonstrated history of achieving exceptional results in member services and programs, particularly in meeting the unique needs of urban communities and vulnerable populations. Essential skills include developing personal relationships, forging community partnerships, fundraising, board development, managing large facilities, financial oversight, membership and program development, marketing, and effectively engaging with diverse populations. The role demands an individual who can navigate a complex environment, build and lead a high-performing team of staff and volunteers, articulate the YMCA's mission and charitable purpose, cultivate relationships, and identify collaborative opportunities within the community. A critical understanding of health equity, social determinants of health, community-integrated health, and collaboration is also required.

Requirements

  • Experienced leader with a record of producing outstanding results and excellence in member services and programs, with a particular emphasis on the unique needs of an urban community with vulnerable populations.
  • Proven skills in developing personal relationships, community partnerships, fund raising, board development, major facility management, financial management, membership and program development, marketing, and working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to embrace a complex environment and develop and lead a high-performing team of staff and volunteers.
  • Proven track record of sophisticated leadership that includes the ability to articulate the Y’s mission and charitable purpose, cultivate relationships and seek collaborative opportunities within the community.
  • An understanding of the concepts of (health) equity, social determinants of health, community integrated health and collaboration.
  • Fundraising experience and a thorough understanding of running an Annual Campaign.
  • Previous budget responsibility of at least $500,000.
  • Experience in development of volunteers; ability to recruit top community leaders.
  • Experience and knowledge in facility management.
  • Successful track record of supervising a full-time staff team.
  • A passion for and experience working with urban communities and vulnerable populations.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, business or equivalent.
  • Six or more years of community services/recreation management experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with serving historically disinvested communities of color.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model and advocate of the YMCA MISSION, Purpose, Values, and Personality of the YMCA.
  • Support the YMCA’s Strategic Vision.
  • Lead the development of the Y board and the annual fundraising campaign.
  • Strengthen and innovate programs and services at the Chestnut Street YMCA including large on-site preschool child development center (90 child capacity), school age child care and day camp (100+ children), Achievers program (400+ youth), on-site supportive housing (41 rooms), outreach services and membership/healthy living programs.
  • Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community and develop/maintain positive collaborative relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.
  • Work with existing neighborhood organizations to strengthen surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Oversee the hiring, training, inspiring and supervision of quality staff.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the branch operating budget and meet or exceed budget targets.
  • Ensure the SAFETY of all staff and participants, including the attractive appearance, and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Direct branch marketing and communication efforts to exceed enrollment and impact goals.
  • Facilitate the partner-tenant integrated services committee to maintain highly integrated services to the community in this new facility.
  • Build and ensure a quality experience for staff and participants that produce Learning, Achievement, and Relationships – Spiritually, Mentally and Physically.
