About The Position

The Executive Director of Transportation is responsible for directing and managing the district's transportation operations, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the transportation department, including the maintenance and operation of all district-owned vehicles. This position reports to the Deputy Superintendent of District Operations and is expected to develop and implement policies, manage budgets, and oversee student transportation services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Clear and valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements required.
  • Insurable by the District's insurance carrier required.
  • 3 or more years in transportation administration, fleet management, and/or school district-level administration.

Nice To Haves

  • Texas Association for Pupil Transportation Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the delivery of transportation services for students and ensures that they are picked up and arrive safely and on time.
  • Develops a timely and efficient bus schedule which allows students to be transported to and from school in a manner which supports the district's mission.
  • Assesses bus routes and other transportation functions to ensure that maximum safety and service are being attained, adjusting when necessary.
  • Communicates changes in routes and scheduling to campuses and the public when warranted.
  • Coordinates transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs.
  • Assigns bus drivers to routes and extracurricular trips and finds substitutes as needed.
  • Ensures transportation operation is supportive of instructional goals and objectives of the District by providing regular reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develops departmental procedures, Transportation employee handbook, and fleet regulations, ensuring all documentation and expectations are aligned with federal and state law.
  • Oversees the development, implementation, and delivery of the safety and training programs for the Transportation Department.
  • Compiles, maintains, files, and presents all reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Prepares, processes, and maintains all documents required to verify safety certification and alcohol and drug testing of bus drivers.
  • Reports annual fund expenditure information, student rider information, contract transportation rider information, driver hour and mileage information, and other pertinent data as required.
  • Ensures that employee time records are accurately maintained and data necessary to process transportation payroll is delivered in a timely manner.
  • Develops and administers budget based on documented needs and ensures that operations are cost effective.
  • Maintains current inventory of supplies and initiates purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.
  • Oversees vehicle preventive maintenance program and activities for the purpose of ensuring vehicles are safe and in effective operating condition.
  • Maintains capital improvement planning for fleet and transportation services.
  • Implements district's student discipline policies and ensures that expectations about appropriate behavior when using district transportation are communicated to students.
  • Investigates reported concerns and takes appropriate action to resolve issues.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff, and makes recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Exhibits high professionalism, standards of conduct, and work ethic.
  • Demonstrates high quality customer service; builds rapport/relationship with the consumer.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence in interactions with others.
