About The Position
Flatiron Books is seeking an Executive Director of Art who possesses a deep passion for a diverse range of books and book cover design. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in art, design, layout, and typography, with the capability to produce original art concepts and art direct across various categories in both fiction and nonfiction. This role is pivotal in shaping the visual identity of our publications and requires a blend of creativity, leadership, and project management skills. In this position, you will be responsible for designing and art directing book jackets and covers for an exciting array of titles, including literary fiction, commercial fiction, mysteries and thrillers, celebrity memoirs, self-help, and cookbooks. You will assign and oversee work from both staff and freelance designers, illustrators, artists, and photographers, ensuring that all visual elements align with the overall vision of the books. Collaboration is key, as you will work closely with editorial, managing editorial, and production teams to evaluate and enhance processes for greater efficiency. Additionally, you will prepare and review jacket files for press and art direct photo shoots as needed, all while adhering to strict deadlines and budgets. Building and maintaining strong relationships with Flatiron staff and external contacts will be essential to your success in this role. You will be expected to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, ensuring that everyone is aligned and informed throughout the design process. Your strong design skillset, particularly in typography, image creation and manipulation, and image research/photo editing, will be crucial in delivering high-quality visual content that resonates with our audience.
