About The Position

The Executive Director of Labor Relations and Special Advisor at the University of Michigan will provide strategic leadership and coordinate labor matters across the university. This role involves working closely with the Associate Vice President of Human Resources and various labor relations teams to negotiate collective bargaining agreements, recognize new bargaining units, and manage labor contract administration. The position requires building collaborative relationships with university leadership and stakeholders, advising on labor-related decisions, and ensuring compliance with labor laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Ten years of relevant work experience within a governmental, public higher education or labor organization, or a similarly complex organization.
  • Broad industry experience in higher education, healthcare, and general industry in contract negotiations.
  • Ability to influence at the executive level and in a matrix organization.
  • Thorough understanding of the relationship between a major public university and state and federal governing bodies regarding labor relations.
  • In-depth knowledge of national and state labor law.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of collective bargaining agreements and effective decision models.
  • Experience managing labor relations issues and fostering positive labor-management relationships.
  • An advanced degree in Law, Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business Administration or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and coordinate overall labor matters across the university.
  • Report on and discuss labor strategy and negotiations with university leadership and the Board of Regents.
  • Build collaborative relationships with university administration and executive leadership.
  • Inform stakeholders, including union leaders, about labor status and recommended engagement strategies.
  • Coordinate with other university offices on overlapping labor issues.
  • Advise on day-to-day labor issues, ensuring compliance with labor laws and regulations.
  • Educate and advise on Labor-Management/Collective Bargaining concepts.
