About The Position

General Summary: The Executive Director (ED), North America Commercial Operations leads a team that supports multiple in-line disease areas, supporting each US Business Unit and their respective leadership teams within North America Commercial. The ED oversees 6 district functions: Commercial Data Management, Digital Customer Engagement, Field Operations, Marketing Operations, Field Training, and Business Engagement Leads. This position reports to the Vice President, North America Commercial Operations, Insights & Analytics and is located at our headquarters in Boston, MA in the Seaport area. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Leads 6 distinct functions: Commercial Data Management, Digital Customer Engagement, Field Operations, Marketing Operations, Field Training, and business engagement leads in support of delivering on the North America Commercial objectives across multiple in-line disease areas Partners with senior leaders across North America Commercial, DTE (IT), HR, Finance, and other key teams to translate business needs into proactive objectives that fuel commercial success Ensures sales and marketing operational implementation effectiveness and efficiency Enhances operational capabilities within team to support NA business in identifying opportunities to successfully support the business as a strategic partner Leads team in supporting existing businesses and new launches for the NA Region including pre- and post-launch activities such as customer field mapping, incentive compensation planning, field force readiness and effectiveness, etc. Understands Vertex business model, multiple disease areas, growth drivers, and supports creation of resourcing recommendations Identifies future capabilities for novel business models to enable success in new disease areas Works effectively with Legal, Medical, and Regulatory colleagues to ensure coordination of support in commercial adjacent functions achieve efficient and effective plans As a people manager within the organization, may have financial accountabilities and human resource responsibilities for assigned staff Collaborates on ad hoc business cases and other duties as needed

Requirements

  • Strong leadership qualities; demonstrated ability to lead, build and develop direct, indirect and cross-functional teams
  • Deep working knowledge of US Commercial Pharmaceutical Industry and the role that Commercial Operations plays within the organization
  • Experience in leading some combination of Field Operations, Digital Marketing, Marketing Operations and Field training teams
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions, understands how to do the research to uncover missing information, and enjoys the challenge of being a solution architect
  • Leverages relationships, data, analytics and strategic mind-set in all aspects of supporting the NA commercial organization
  • Work effectively with internal stakeholders, external experts and support partners to assimilate leading insights to ensure in-line brands are successfully supported
  • Ability to work across disease areas and multiple (5+) Business Units
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and make sound recommendations to internal customers and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Proven ability to effectively manage ambiguity; can successfully cope with change, shift gears comfortably, decide and act without having the total picture
  • Exhibits outstanding written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively write and deliver presentations to professionals at all levels within Vertex
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to negotiate internally/externally often at higher levels and beyond
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, finance, quantitative major required.
  • Typically requires 10 years of experience in Commercial Pharmaceutical organization and/or Strategy/Management Consulting or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in leading large multi-functional team of Commercial Operations professionals
  • Prior successful management of vendors and consultants
  • Experience with commercial drug launches, preferably in specialty
  • Experience in working within a matrixed organization
