About The Position

Under the general supervision and direction of the Deputy Superintendent, the focus for this position will be on working with school principals to support their work with teachers, support staff, parents and others in the community to create learning communities that maximize the personal, creative, and academic performance of students and adults. This position directly supervises all elementary principals, along with an administrative secretary. This position is a part of the Administrative Leadership Team and serves on the Superintendent’s Council.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in educational administration or appropriate related field; earned doctorate preferred.
  • Successful experience as a principal or K-12 district level supervisor, director or executive director.
  • Successful leadership experience in public school administration and supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people.
  • Experience, understanding and sensitivity in working in a multi-cultural and ethnically diverse school surroundings, with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the community and school environment, evidence of experience and training needed to perform the functions described in the essential functions.
  • Experience working with K-12 curriculum issues and demonstrated working knowledge of standardized testing and the design and implementation of alternative assessment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge of pertinent state and federal laws relating to K-12 education administration.
  • Demonstrated increasingly responsible successful leadership experience in complex school organizations.
  • Extensive knowledge of the educational process at the school level, school leadership, and research in educational performance standards.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive reports, division materials, and correspondence.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to organize, set priorities and coordinate activities.
  • Knowledge of effective supervisory practices and procedures.

  • Knowledge of effective evaluative techniques applied to program models, tests and techniques of statistical measurement.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities and assigned tasks for efficient use of time.
  • Current Washington State Administrator certificate
  • Ability to gain access to Joint Base Lew-McChord in compliance with the REAL ID Act.

Responsibilities

  • Program and Instruction Model educational excellence and equity in District programs using District performance outcomes for all students.
  • Create and maintain a positive focus on the needs of all children in all areas of school operations.
  • Promote and facilitate the development of program alignment with learning goals kindergarten through high-school graduation.
  • Identify other duties of the position which will aid in the attainment of a high quality education for all students, prescribe and perform those duties as necessary, and consult with the deputy superintendent, colleagues, and others as necessary to achieve success for all concerned.
  • Assist in developing and supporting District and school level in-service/staff development initiatives.
  • Preview and monitor school plans to ensure delivery of program outcomes that meet District goals.
  • Review and monitor school data for continued district improvement (e.g., discipline, attendance, enrollment, waivers, grades, retention, eligibility, special education compliance, Becca Bill, Z-codes, and grants).
  • Ensure that the district-established, site based management process is implemented and evaluated in each school.
  • Develop and maintain clear communication with and among schools.
  • Ensure the District discipline policy is implemented and maintained in schools.
  • Oversee the process of educational reform and restructuring at the building level.
  • Recommend, prepare and monitor policies and procedures in the area of building administration, site based management, etc.
  • Develop and maintain clear communication with District support staff to ensure effective service to schools.
  • Supervise and evaluate principals.
  • On behalf of the Superintendent, leads the selection, orientation and evaluation of new Building Administrators.
  • Provide support and guidance for the selection of instructional and support staff.
  • Create, develop and conduct new Principal orientation.
  • Organize and run support groups for new Principals to foster District philosophies and values while promoting group camaraderie.
  • Organize and conduct Principal meetings and retreats.
  • Oversee the administration of the Principal Academy for effective professional development of principals to meet District educational goals.
  • Coordinate administrative internship programs and administrators in-service.
  • Promote effective relationships with staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Serves as a council advisor to the Superintendent.
  • Serve as task group leader for general administrative projects as directed.
  • Represents Superintendent and/or Deputy Superintendent on general administrative/instructional program matters as directed.
  • Organize and conduct Board presentations.
  • Monitor the Board Briefs that come from schools.
  • Oversee the planning, preparation, and monitoring of elementary school operating budgets in conjunction with school principals.
  • Provide assistance with analysis of staffing and personnel budgeting needs.
  • Provide approval on all purchase order and travel requests for area of responsibility.
  • Monitor the professional development budgets.
  • Assist schools with the development and implementation of parent involvement strategies, school/business partnerships, and securing and maintaining community involvement.
  • Reconcile conflicts and differences among staff, students, parents, and community members with a focus on the District’s mission.
  • Actively participate in community meetings and events including Fort Lewis, McChord and the City of Lakewood.
  • Assist with maintaining an effective public information program.
  • Assist with securing community and staff involvement, when appropriate, in establishing and implementing district objectives and programs.
  • Continue professional study and activity.
  • Use current knowledge to address educational and administrative matters.
  • Respond positively to suggestions for professional improvement.
  • Modify own behavior on the basis of self-appraisal.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
