The Executive Director, Communications & Advocacy will drive the development of a coordinated brand, communications, and advocacy strategy targeting current and prospective K-12 and channel partners, key internal and external stakeholders, alumni, and philanthropic donors. The Executive Director will develop and implement an innovative and best-in-class editorial and content strategy aimed to position New Leaders as a nationally recognized, proven strategic partner and expert at solving educational leadership challenges. This role is designed to amplify organizational brand awareness, expand thought leadership visibility, drive relevant traffic through content and SEO strategy, and support marketing that cultivates philanthropic donors and deepens engagement with K-12 system partners. Storytelling will be at the heart of this work, ensuring every channel and tactic elevates the voices of alumni, funders, and partners to build trust and credibility.

  • Create and implement strategies to drive reach, reputation, and revenue across New Leaders’ communications funnel.
  • Work with senior leadership to oversee and implement the communications strategy.
  • Lead the creation of compelling multi-channel content that articulates the organization’s mission, vision, policies, programs, and impact.
  • Lead owned media corporate communications initiatives.
  • Craft and evolve core narratives and compelling stories that articulate organizational and program value.
  • Develop clear, consistent messaging that supports thought leadership, media engagement, donor cultivation, and K-12 partner communications.
  • Develop standardized language, templates, and boilerplates for communications.
  • Build and maintain compelling proposal templates, fact sheets, and presentation decks.
  • Develop and oversee new brand guidelines, including logos, messaging, and templates.
  • Lead website strategy and management.
  • Conduct keyword research, develop SEO-driven content, and maintain SEO rankings.
  • Develop gated content for lead generation.
  • Oversee annual social content strategy and calendars.
  • Lead and optimize paid search campaigns.
  • Design and execute integrated earned media, advocacy, and impact strategies.
  • Develop relationships with journalists and the media.
  • Plan and manage issues and crisis response.
  • Prepare members of the Executive Team for media engagements.
  • Continuously leverage analytics to evaluate opportunities and inform media strategy.
  • Lead the creation of high-impact storytelling assets.
  • Increase awareness of New Leaders’ impact data.
  • Develop quarterly and annual funder reports and alumni communications.
  • Lead multimedia content and lead generation strategy for events.
  • Manage vendors to support initiatives.
  • Develop and manage expense budgets and business plans.
  • Participate in strategic planning across the team.
  • Maintain a centralized content library with updated brand assets.
  • Partner with the CEO to craft and deliver internal communications.
  • Draft and edit CEO messages and organizational updates.
  • Develop and manage regular internal communications channels.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with Program, Partnerships, and Development teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 10 years of professional experience required, including significant leadership experience in nonprofit, education, or mission-driven communications and marketing.
  • Proven ability to design and execute integrated brand, communications, and advocacy strategies.
  • Experience leading digital strategy, including SEO, content optimization, website development, social media engagement, and paid campaigns.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with individuals across a variety of backgrounds.

  • Superior and persuasive verbal and written communication skills.
  • Deep storytelling expertise with a track record of producing high-impact assets.
  • Compelling writer and communicator.
  • Ability to turn content and resources around quickly.

  • Proven experience managing budgets and external vendors.
  • Ability to be self-directed and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating across organization.
  • Mandatory proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Preferred proficiency in Salesforce, HubSpot, and Adobe Creative Suite.
