About The Position

The AHDC operates as the New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in partnership with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food- and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations. The AHDC, as a Level 1 laboratory of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, provides surveillance and diagnostic testing for important domestic and transboundary diseases in coordination with the USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratories. The AHDC is a member of the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network, which assists the Food and Drug Administration in the surveillance of animal feeds and drugs. The AHDC is a service enterprise that is fully integrated into the academic and service mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine, with an operating budget of $40 million, employing over 250 people, including faculty, staff, and support personnel, and with over 7,000 active accounts of clinics and practicing veterinarians who submit samples from throughout the U.S. and several other countries. Over 300,000 submissions were received in calendar year 2024, which generated almost 1 million test codes and millions of tests. The AHDC testing services is supported by a strong commitment to basic research and is focused on identifying emerging threats and a comprehensive understanding of disease processes. The Executive Director of the AHDC and Associate Dean for Diagnostic Operations and Government Relations leads and supports the AHDC mission, providing executive leadership and strategic direction for all programs associated with the laboratory, as well as serves as liaison to state and federal government offices, representing CVM and its interests. This includes supervision of diagnostic and related service activities of AHDC laboratory units and program directors and providing the chair of the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences with annual performance feedback of academic appointments within the AHDC. The AHDC Executive Director also engages and supports the Dean in the Veterinary College's communication and coordination of AHDC activities with state and federal agencies. The incumbent reports to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and works cooperatively with the Chair of the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences and other college leaders in the management of the AHDC.

Requirements

  • DVM degree or equivalent.
  • Substantial professional veterinary or animal health experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in administration of a veterinary diagnostic laboratory or equivalent organization.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Active involvement in national veterinary diagnostic organizations (i.e. AAVLD).
  • Experience working with state or federal government agencies or legislative offices.

Responsibilities
