About The Position

The Executive Administrator, Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care, is responsible for executing the strategic plan of the health system by aligning faculty recruitment and deployment across all of UCM perioperative environments and anesthesia service lines within the health system. This leadership role involves understanding capacity, access, and health system margins by location to ensure efficient allocation of resources, optimal patient care, and adherence to regulatory standards. A critical aspect of this role includes strategic decision-making in collaboration with the department chair. Areas include but are not limited to, faculty compensation, budget planning, capital allocation, and financial stewardship at both the department and site levels. The Executive Administrator, Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care will utilize data analytics to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to operational efficiency, financial outcomes, and patient care quality, leveraging insights to drive improvements in anesthesia services. This role evaluates financial performance and cost drivers to guide investments that enhance operational efficiency and support the long-term sustainability of anesthesia services. In collaboration with department heads, procedural colleagues, system location-specific leaders and strategy, the Executive Administrator, Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care develops comprehensive business/deployment plans, ensures alignment of financial and operational objectives, and fosters innovation in clinical services while adhering to the overall health system strategy.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Stay informed on advancements in technology, techniques, and best practices in anesthesia and perioperative care. Promote the adoption of innovative approaches to enhance efficiency and patient care.
  • Facilitate the recruitment, retention, and promotion of faculty, administrative staff, and scientists to advance the mission of the department and institution. Collaborate with Strategy executives and partners to create strategic plans per site and across the health system. Evaluate strategic opportunities and plans to develop a roadmap for optimal clinical care and expansion. Collaborate with partners internal and external to the health system to assess market share, expansion opportunities, and potential partnerships. Execute the health system strategy for faculty deployment in all perioperative locations and service lines across the health system. Collaborate / partner with departments, service lines, hospital operations, and strategy leadership to identify programmatic needs and develop robust recruitment plans. Model and optimize anesthesia provider deployments by location, considering health system margin, OR capacity, resource needs, and market analysis. Work to align recruitment strategies and deployment accordingly. Evaluate and monitor programmatic expansion and performance compared to original plans to ensure strategic targets are being met, considering adjustments to deployments as needed. Meet growth objectives as identified in strategic plan(s), annual operating plan(s), and clinical priorities across the health system with milestones per site. Foster collaboration among clinical leadership, faculty, support services, and external partners to drive the success of new and expanded service lines, clinical sites, and strategic alliances.
  • Oversee the operational management of anesthesia services, including scheduling, staffing, and resource allocation. Lead the department by identifying short-term and long-range issues that must be addressed, providing information and commentary pertinent to deliberations, recommending options and courses of action, developing actions plans for achieving these goals, supervising the implementation of the plans, determining if goals are being met via periodic dashboard reports, and instituting corrective actions where necessary. Maintain a competent staff by selecting, orienting, and training employees and/or volunteers. Maintain staff performance by counseling, appraising, and disciplining employees and/or volunteers and follows up on work performance. Departmental scope includes HR, academic affairs, finance, research, education and section administration. Work with ambulatory leadership to secure complementary clinic space for deployment and ensure efficient patient routing with the call center. Prepare an annual budget and regular reports on the financial status of the department. Identify opportunities for cost reductions. Ensures achievement of operational targets such as length of stay (LOS), patient access, service line capacity, template utilization, and other critical metrics that support strategic goals and operational excellence. Ensure personnel and other resources are available to fully support and enhance premiere clinical, educational and training programs sponsored by the department. Provides central department expertise to support teaching faculty as they prepare for and present classroom and clinical/research laboratory-based curriculum for graduate and medical school students. Ensure dedicated support is available for faculty directors of department-sponsored resident and fellowship training programs. Organize space, equipment, and services to meet the needs of the ambulatory patient, inpatients, physicians, nurses, and research and develops appropriate staffing levels of professional, technical, and other personnel within established budgetary parameters. Ensure clear decision-making through oversight of billing, information systems, reporting, and analytics. Practice Continuous Quality Improvement by identifying customer requirements, both actual and anticipated, and by active personal contact, collaboration, and rapport with potential and actual customers. Employees and/or volunteers demonstrate an understanding of their department’s function and its impact on the organization as a whole.
  • Foster a culture of safety and quality, leading initiatives to improve patient outcomes and experience. Meet all legal and regulatory requirements, including corporate compliance related to expansion and billing. Facilitate research and educational initiatives by supporting faculty, securing resources for research activities, and ensuring a collaborative environment that supports academic and clinical advancements while adhering to federal, state and University standards. Directs department priorities, allocates resources and executes strategic plans. Manages multiple related teams including those within hospital functions. Performs other related work as needed.
