The Role – Excavator Operator The Excavator Operator is responsible for operating excavating equipment to dig, move, and grade soil, rock, or other materials in construction, or other projects. This role will monitor equipment performance, perform routine maintenance, and follow safety protocols to ensure efficient and safe operations. The role involves reading plans, coordinating with team members, and assisting with project layout and material handling. The role helps ensure projects are completed accurately, on schedule, and in compliance with safety standards. Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and adherence to safety procedures are essential for success in this role.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-5 years of experience operating excavators or similar heavy machinery.
  • Proficiency in operating, maintaining, and performing basic troubleshooting on excavators and/or similar heavy machinery.
  • Technical knowledge of how to properly use equipment needed for the job.
  • Expert knowledge of the types of materials being moved, dug, loaded or unloaded.
  • Knowledge of how to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, designs.
  • Understanding of how to conduct pre-operational checks on equipment and how to maintain them.
  • Strong knowledge of all safety requirements for the job site.
  • Ability to respond effectively to operational challenges and equipment issues.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills for coordinating with project leads.
  • Spatial awareness with strong attention to detail.
  • Competent with relevant computer applications including MS Word and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational or technical training in heavy equipment operation.
  • CDL or the ability to obtain CDL, if necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all excavating work for the company.
  • Use appropriate machinery to excavate, clear, move, load and unload materials or cargo.
  • Conduct pre-operation inspections, perform routine maintenance, basic repairs, and report malfunctions.
  • Refer to blueprints, designs or drawings to determine what is needed on the job.
  • Trenching, lot pole bases, and flat work for generator pads.
  • Always providing a clean and organized job site.
  • Will be the lead on the Excavating job site working with Supervisor or lead foreman.
  • May have additional team member onsite that will be the helper/spotter and assist with set up.
  • This position will be responsible for assisting estimating with creating quotes and proposals for said jobs.
  • Assist in the setup, relocation, and secure storage of excavators and related tools.
  • Follow all OSHA standards, use personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Will also be part of the Field Services team cross trained to assist in Tools, Shipping and Receiving, Deliveries, and Inventory when needed.
