Title and Summary EVP, General Counsel, Global Employment Law Role Overview The General Counsel for Global Employment Law acts as a trusted, senior legal advisor on employment-related issues globally. This executive level position sits on both the Law and People and Capabilities leadership teams and is responsible for managing legal risk and aligning employment-related legal strategies with organizational business goals. The role collaborates most closely with the People & Capabilities (HR) team, Community and Belonging team, Region Counsels, and executive leadership across the company. Additionally, the position provides expert legal guidance and strategic direction on employment law matters company-wide, ensuring compliance with laws while promoting business objectives. The role requires deep subject matter expertise in all areas of employment law, strong people leader skills, strategic vision and the capability to work effectively with senior leaders to shape the workforce strategy.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
  • 15+ years of extensive legal experience with a strong emphasis on global employment law, ideally within the payments or financial technology sectors.
  • Proven track record of leading large, multi-jurisdictional legal teams and overseeing high-profile, complex investigations.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic employment-related guidance and risk management advice to C-suite executives and senior leadership.
  • Proven success in navigating multi-national organizations and operating effectively within a diverse multicultural organization
  • Must demonstrate a proactive, time sensitive, results driven approach in carrying out all responsibilities
  • Ability to execute in a positive and thoughtful manner on how things get done as well what gets done; must be able to distinguish and articulate the risks and the reward and help the business move forward thoughtfully and expeditiously
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is a requirement
  • Strong communication skills with clients and colleagues
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills a must

Responsibilities

  • Build, coach, and scale a high-performing, multi-jurisdictional team; define roles, competencies, and career paths; establish clear goals, performance routines, and a common culture of collaboration.
  • Align Mastercard’s global employment law function in partnership with internal stakeholders to meet the organizational needs.
  • In conjunction with Region Counsels, provide advice to ensure adherence to emerging and existing employment related laws globally, as well as compliance with best practices.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, thought leader, and advisor across a wide range of employment law issues, including, but not limited to, the following: discrimination, employment related documents and policies, benefits, compensation, global mobility, pay equity, pay transparency and compliance with wage payment laws, reasonable accommodation, organization design, separation negotiations, claim and litigation management, protection of trade secrets including restrictive covenants, and all matters related to merger and acquisitions.
  • Oversee outside counsel relationships to assist in employment litigation, investigations, risk management and disputes
