Role Overview The City of Covington is seeking a dedicated Evidence Technician to join our Police Department. In this critical role, you will process crime scenes, collect, and preserve physical evidence, maintain the integrity of the chain of custody, and provide expert court testimony. This position requires a highly analytical individual with experience in forensic sciences, attention to detail, and the ability to work in physically and emotionally demanding environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of training and experience in a crime lab (required)
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws related to evidence handling.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and communicate clearly in both oral and written form.
  • Skill in crime scene photography, plaster cast preparation, and interpreting physical evidence patterns.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must pass a background check, polygraph examination, and drug screening.
  • Willingness to work shifts, be on-call, and operate in varying physical environments.

  • Master's degree (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Process major crime scenes, including collection, identification, documentation, and preservation of physical evidence.
  • Photograph, video record, and diagram crime scenes with precision.
  • Develop latent fingerprints and perform field tests on substances including chemicals, body fluids, and foreign materials.
  • Attend and retrieve evidence from autopsies.
  • Maintain detailed evidence logs and ensure strict chain of custody protocols.
  • Transport evidence to laboratories and courts as required.
  • Prepare detailed reports and testify in court as an expert witness.
  • Apply knowledge of forensic sciences, including latent prints, tool marks, glass fractures, and blood spatter analysis.
  • Read, understand, and apply technical procedures and laws related to evidence collection.
  • Operate and maintain tools, cameras, and lab equipment used in fieldwork and lab analysis.
