Ensures the proper care, custody, control and safekeeping of items submitted as evidence. Responsibilities 1. Receives, indexes, inventories, tracks, stores and releases evidence, reviews items submitted prior to acceptance to determine if evidence meets acceptance criteria, prepares documents and secures signatures to preserve the internal transfer record and the chain of custody. 2. Answers routine inquiries or refers inquiries regarding status of evidence to appropriate personnel, when necessary. 3. Maintains detailed records and active quality control/assurance systems, assists in audits, documents the validity and quality of the evidence handling process, ensuring legal requirements are met, and assists in developing written evidence-handling procedures. 4. Presents items used as exhibits in court ensuring safekeeping during and after the proceedings, and testifies in court as necessary. 5. Cleans, organizes and secures evidence storage area, properly storing and disposing of items to maximize available space. 6. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Experience and Training: Graduation from an accredited high school/GED Program. Three (3) years of work related experience or 45 hours from an accredited college or university or a combination of the two. Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Skilled in the use of standard software applications. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public. Must adhere to strict rules of confidentiality relative to the operation and contents of the property. Must pass an extensive background check. Mandatory drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment. Depending on the location, this position may require a valid Texas Driver’s license, with good driving record and/or knowledge of the Code of Criminal Procedures, Penal Code, Rules of Evidence and Texas Controlled Substance Act and/or knowledge of chemical and biological safe handling procedures. Physical/Environmental Requirements: Requires prolong sitting while working on the computer. Ability to climb ladders, with overhead lifting of weights up to 30 lbs. (unassisted) to store and retrieve evidence on shelves. Due to the nature of some evidence, the incumbent may be required to work in areas with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards or handle evidence of a potential health risk.
