About The Position

Assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division of the Police Department. The supervisor is responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, and evaluating the function and staff within the property/evidence room. A major function of the supervisor is to establish an organized approach to gathering evidence at a crime scene through proper procedures to include documentation, collection, and preservation of evidence. Also, maintain and safeguard the integrity of all police held property in accordance with state laws, city ordinances and department policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Must have up-to-date knowledge of laws, rules and regulations related to property and evidence collection, storage, and maintenance; customer service methods and delivery; computers and related equipment, hardware and software for multiple database entry, storage, retrieval, research and statistical information.
  • Work in both the field and office environment; subject to adverse outdoor weather conditions; bend, reach, kneel, and lift up to 25 pounds (records of evidence or boxes of files).

  • Identify, collect and preserve evidence to be used in criminal proceedings.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science or other related field and at least five years of related experience in criminal justice, evidence room, forensics, and/or crime scene processing.
  • Must possess a current driver’s license.
  • Must obtain basic certification from T.A.P.E.I.T. (Texas Association of Property and Evidence Inventory Technicians)?OR basic certification from I.A.P.E. (International Association of Property and Evidence) within two (2) years of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to crime scenes, gather and process physical evidence, photograph and sketch crime scenes and collect physical evidence
  • Ensure that evidence is collected and stored according to policy
  • Utilizes special processes, methods and equipment for the detection and collection of evidence
  • Store and retrieve all property and evidence collected, seized, or kept by the Police Department assuring a continuous chain of custody
  • Maintain all records related to property and evidence
  • Manage the delivery of evidence to and from court, laboratories, prosecutor’s offices and other locations
  • Purges inventory of property/evidence for destruction, conversion, or auction
  • Maintain knowledge of the law and policies regarding the management, including the process for final disposition of evidence and property
  • Assists officers in packaging of property/evidence and verify packaging procedures are followed daily
  • Write reports regarding scene documentation, evidence collection and processing
  • Testify as a witness in court
  • Provide support and training, pertaining to crime scene and evidence and property
  • Manage the ordering, storing and furnishing of forensic and evidentiary supplies
  • Maintain on-call status for crime scene response
  • Presents pertinent law enforcement information to the public.
  • Observes all safety rules and procedures
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
