About The Position

We're protecting and enhancing America's National Park System for present and future generations. National Parks Conversation Association (NPCA) is the nation’s oldest and largest national parks nonprofit, advocacy organization. NPCA has an exciting opportunity for an Everglades Fellow to join our Sun Coast Regional Office. Location: Remote (Miami-Dade County) Work Status: Part-time (20 hours/week); Term six-month position with possibility for extension Salary: $18 per hour (Grade J) Position Overview: NPCA’s Sun Coast office seeks an individual passionate about environmental conservation to support our goals for advancing Everglades protection and restoration. This is a part-time, remote opportunity (20 hours per week) with a flexible schedule, with hours to be completed within normal workweek hours (M-Th, 9-5), plus occasional weekend community events and national park field trips. The right candidate will be based in Miami-Dade County and will be comfortable attending in-person meetings and events as well as working virtually on writing and research projects. The goal of this position is to support NPCA’s policy and engagement work in South Florida related to protection and restoration of Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, Biscayne National Park, and the surrounding waters and ecosystems including the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. This will involve a combination of policy work (example: analyzing restoration projects and writing summary memos), ecosystem protection advocacy (example: attending public meetings to speak against development threats which may harm the Everglades) and developing outreach materials (example: researching polling data, creating bilingual fact sheets).

Requirements

  • Strong public speaking, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, reliably, and as part of a team in a virtual setting.
  • Capacity to respond to requests and complete tasks in a timely, high-quality manner.
  • Outgoing individual comfortable with community engagement and public speaking.
  • Enthusiasm, positive attitude, and interest in national park and environmental issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Background or experience in environmental issues preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Advance NPCA’s goal to connect with community leaders about national park issues by meeting with local elected and agency officials in Miami-Dade County.
  • Participate in meetings, phone calls, and events with environmental and community partners to protect Everglades National Park and the surrounding ecosystem from development threats, including representing NPCA on the Hold the Line Coalition in Miami.
  • Draft language for NPCA advocacy alerts and updates to members in South Florida.
  • Develop a suite of outreach materials, which may include PowerPoint slides, one-pagers, and other visuals that will support NPCA’s ongoing engagement of new national park advocates and education among local community leaders on national park issues.
  • Support virtual and in-person events in South Florida as opportunities arise.
