About The Position

To manage the event security program for campus. Assist with emergency and non-emergency events, including but not limited to, event security budget, administration, personnel, information systems, general office management, training, and policy development. Campus Security Authority: This position is identified as a “Campus Security Authority (CSA)” per the federal law known as the Clery Act. Per this law, the employee is required to report any crimes that he/she becomes aware of to the Clery Compliance Officer. Additionally, CSAs are required to complete annual training prescribed by the Clery Compliance Officer. Department Overview: Boise State University’s Department of Public Safety is responsible for more than ”people safety.” In addition to university Security, our team includes the university's Emergency Management Department, Transportation (Shuttle buses and the Cycle Learning Center) and Parking, and Integrated Security Technology. Level Scope: Spends the majority of time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of subordinate staff. Manages experienced professionals who exercise latitude and independence in assignments. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with autonomy. Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and campus wide goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls with a focus on policy and strategy implementation. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets and requires practical knowledge in leading and managing the execution of processes, projects and tactics within one area.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of the National Incident Management System and Incident Command System principles and concepts.
  • Currently certified in First Aid/CPR/AED (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience training others in security-related topics.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with strong analytical skills.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, ability to manage conflict.
  • Knowledge, skill, and competency in working with diverse populations.
  • Initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Proficient in database programs and Google online products.
  • Currently forklift certified or the ability to become certified.
  • Ability to develop, implement and facilitate event security training.
  • Ability to develop an Emergency Action Plan.
  • Experience in developing and leading an Event Security Program.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and other various personnel/agencies.
  • Ability to respond appropriately and in a timely manner to emergency situations.
  • Ability to create and manage budgets, create report and present findings.
  • Ability to supervise, evaluate, educate and train others.
  • Ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential matters and information.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, plus 5 years of experience, including 1 year of management experience.
  • Currently certified in First Aid/CPR/AED (or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment).
  • A current and valid Diver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of experience managing an event security program at an institution of higher education.
  • At least 2 years of experience planning, coordinating, and participating in workshops, training, and outreach programs.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Management of the Event Security unit, includes the hiring, positive recognition, and discipline.
  • Evaluates 3rd party contracted security’s performance and provide feedback.
  • Develops and maintains the Event Security training program including the new hire training program annual training, 3rd party contracted security training, in-service training, technical training such as but not limited to; event security screening, online training program, and off-campus training opportunities.
  • Responsible for Planning and Preparation of Event Action Plans, Procedures, and Training.
  • Oversees the budget including the development, projection, and revision of departmental budgets while incorporating strategic planning goals as part of the annual budget process.
  • Insures inventory control and accountability for purchases, personal safety equipment, medical supplies, emergency response supplies, radios, and vehicles.
  • Respond to community support requests, suggestions, complaints, or concerns; conduct investigations when necessary; and provide the appropriate feedback.
  • Chairs and manages the multi-disciplinary Unified Venue Security Cooperative by overseeing and developing plans and approaches to various campus events ensuring collaboration on policy and procedure development, and systems to ensure the safety of events.
  • Oversees staffing needs and scheduling of 3rd party contracted security.
  • Responsible for public relations and relationship building with all campus community members.
  • Engages in departmental problem-solving for organizational issues; makes recommendations for department efficiencies and advancement.
  • Responds to campus during emergency events.
  • The position will be on-call and responsible to work extended hours including weekends. It requires exerting up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently.
  • May perform other duties as needed.
