About The Position

The Evening Shelving Worker is a work-study employee who will work in the Seminary Library's Reading Room from 6 PM to 10 PM on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. You will begin your evening work by reading the shelves in a section of the seminary library. "Reading the shelves" is a technical term meaning that you must make sure the books on the shelves in the stacks of the Reading Room are in their proper alpha-numeric order. Often our staff or library patrons cannot find a book because that book, rather than being lost or stolen, is not in its proper place. It is a shelf away or a few books away from its proper place. The Evening Shelving Worker on Mondays will read shelves with alpha-numeric shelf numbers that begin with the letters AC to BR. This is the section of books on philosophy, Judaism, church history. The Evening Shelving Worker on Tuesdays will read all the shelves with books whose alpha-numeric label begins with the letters BS. These are all our Scripture books. The Shelving Worker on Wednesday evenings will read the shelves in the section containing books whose shelf number begins with the letters BT thru BV, that is Christology, Mariology, and Spirituality. This task should not take more than an hour. When it is ended, go and get from the staff room the cart of books that need to be re-shelved in the stacks in the Reading Room. Once you have re-shelved those books, you must check the periodical display shelves to make sure periodicals are in their proper place. If you find current periodicals missing, then you should look on the desktops and carrels for them. In the last half-hour, that is, between 9:30 PM and 10 PM, check all study areas for books and periodicals that have been consulted but not checked-out and thus need to be re-shelved. At the same time straighten out or push in chairs at the carrels or desks. Finally, you must check the copier machine to make sure its copier paper bins are full for next morning's use. Then turn off the copier machine.
