About The Position

The Evening Counselor at Jan & Peter's Place is responsible for milieu management and engaging clients in a direct social service program. This role involves a mix of direct service, operations, and administrative tasks to ensure the effective operation of the shelter, which provides a safe space for female-identifying guests experiencing homelessness. The Counselor will engage clients through various activities, including intake, assessment, advocacy, and crisis intervention, while also handling meal preparation and light janitorial duties.

Requirements

• 1 year of experience in customer service.
• 1 year of experience in a social/human service setting (desired).
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect for diverse backgrounds.
• Knowledge of best practices in crisis intervention and stabilization.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

• Current WA State Food Handlers Permit (if not current, will be sponsored within 1 month of hire).
• Familiarity with issues of housing instability, mental health, and substance use.
• Degree in human/social services or related field.

Responsibilities

• Manage the milieu and engage clients in social service programs.
• Conduct client intake and assessment to determine needs.
• Provide advocacy, information, and referral services to clients.
• Prepare meals and perform light janitorial tasks as assigned.
• Mediate conflicts and provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support.
• Maintain accurate logs, records, and case notes of client interactions.
