About The Position

The Evening English Language Arts (ELA) Adjunct Instructor at Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School supports adult learners through high-quality English instruction at our Ward 8 campus. This position reports to the Assistant Principal and serves within the Academics functional area. The Evening ELA Adjunct teaches on-site Monday through Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 421 Alabama Avenue SE, Washington, DC. Compensation for this position is $5,500 per course, per term. Academy of Hope is seeking instructors who are committed to creating a supportive, empowering, and inclusive learning environment while delivering rigorous English Language Arts instruction aligned to adult education standards. Adjunct instructors are assigned to one ELA instructional level (Levels 1–5) based on program need and instructional experience and play a critical role in supporting adult learners as they work toward a GED or high school diploma and prepare for postsecondary education and workforce success. Adjunct instructors at Academy of Hope focus on high-quality instruction and learner engagement within an assigned course, while full-time instructional staff carry additional responsibilities related to advising, program development, and school-wide initiatives. ELA Instructional Levels (Assigned by Program Need) ELA Level 1 – Foundational Literacy: Beginning reading, writing, phonics, and basic sentence structure. ELA Level 2 – Emerging Literacy: Reading comprehension, paragraph writing, and grammar fundamentals. ELA Level 3 – Intermediate Literacy: Multi-paragraph writing, longer text comprehension, and grammar application. ELA Level 4 – Secondary-Level Literacy: Analysis of complex texts and GED-aligned reading and writing. ELA Level 5 – College & Career Readiness: Advanced reading analysis, extended writing, and workplace/postsecondary communication.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Education, English, Humanities, or related field preferred).
  • Experience teaching adult learners strongly preferred.
  • Experience teaching literacy, English, writing, reading, social studies, or integrated humanities coursework.
  • Familiarity with College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education.
  • Experience with adult assessments (CASAS, GED, NEDP, Accuplacer) preferred.
  • Strong instructional, communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and adult learner success.

Responsibilities

  • Teach adult basic education, secondary, or postsecondary-level ELA courses within the assigned instructional level.
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans aligned to College and Career Readiness Standards and AoH curriculum maps.
  • Provide direct and indirect instruction using adult-centered, culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Assess learner progress and adjust instruction to meet individual needs.
  • Prepare learners for required assessments (e.g., CASAS, GED, NEDP, Accuplacer).
  • Maintain accurate attendance and learner progress records.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff and Student Support Services to support learner success.
  • Participate in required professional development and instructional feedback opportunities.
