About The Position

Ethicist provides coverage for ethics consult requests in the Central Illinois Region, by being on-call for consults as part of the annual consult coverage rotation. This coverage rotation is shared by all members of the ethics committee with the training and education to serve as a consultant. Each consultant has times during the year, when they are primarily responsible for responding to ethics consultation requests within the region. Find it here. Requirements

  • Clinical consultation
  • Master's Degree: Bioethics

Responsibilities

  • when on-call for ethics, to field requests for consultation and either respond personally, or arrange for a sub-group from the larger ethics committee, to respond to the consult request.
  • to discuss the consult with the individual making the request and the healthcare team members supporting the patient's situation. Team members will include physicians, nurses, nursing leadership, social work, case management, chaplains, and any other healthcare team members involved in that situation.
  • the consultant will identify the ethical issues inherent in the situation, clarify any points of tension or conflict, and identify using a Principles based or other Ethical process what options are possible or acceptable for that specific patient situation. The consultant will share with the medical team their findings, in a manner that promotes communication and helps clarify positive direction for medical decision making.
  • the consultant will utilize EPIC to review the medical record, and to document the ethics consult conversation and findings for the healthcare team.
