Estate Planning Attorney (Practice Transitioners Welcome)

The Village Law FirmNew York, NY
3d$135,000 - $165,000Onsite

About The Position

The Village Law Firm is a fast-growing boutique trusts and estates firm that serves New York City’s most vibrant residents—artists, entrepreneurs, tech wizards, and the occasional eccentric. We are building a modern firm that prioritizes the client experience (and the employee experience) over tradition. We use technology to make life easier, we laugh in the office, and we genuinely like each other. We are looking for an attorney with 3+ years of experience who wants to help families and build relationships. Tired of custody battles? Burned out by endless litigation? If you are tired of adversarial fighting or corporate grinding, we offer a different path. Ready to pivot? You don’t need to be an estate planning expert on Day 1. We will train you on the tax and technical aspects. We need you to bring the intellect, the empathy, and the willingness to learn.

Requirements

  • The Experience: You have 3+ years of legal experience. If you’ve survived three years of litigation, M&A, or divorce law, you have the grit we are looking for. (Prior T&E experience is a plus, but not required).
  • The Credentials: Member in good standing of the New York State Bar (Non-negotiable).
  • Legal Skills: You have strong research and drafting skills. You can digest a complex statute and distill it, even if it's in a new area of law
  • The Tech Skills: You are comfortable with technology. You know your way around Microsoft Office, but more importantly, you aren't afraid to learn new software that makes your life easier.
  • The Communicator: You can explain complex legal concepts to a painter or a start-up founder without putting them to sleep (or confusing them with "legalese").
  • The Personality: You have high emotional intelligence and a warm demeanor.
  • The "No Jerks" Rule: We protect our culture fiercely. We are kind, supportive, and collaborative, and we expect you to be, too.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior T&E experience is a plus, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Be a Counselor: Meet with current and prospective clients to discuss some of life’s toughest realities.
  • Educate: Help clients understand complex legal concepts in easy-to-understand language.
  • Draft & Design: Prepare estate plans ranging from simple wills to complex tax-saving trusts. (We’ll teach you the complex stuff, but you need to be eager to learn it).
  • Guide Grieving Families: Handle probate and estate administration with empathy. You will help families navigate the court system during some of their hardest moments.
  • Resolve Disputes: Occasionally handle contested matters (like will contests or accounting disputes) to protect our clients. We value your ability to stand your ground in court, even though we prioritize practical solutions over endless battles.
  • Innovate: Master our tech stack. We don’t do things "because that’s how we’ve always done it." We want you to use modern legal tech to streamline the boring work so you can focus on the law.
  • Collaborate: Work from our Midtown office 4 days a week. We believe real mentorship and collaboration happen in person, not just on Zoom.

Benefits

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Plans with Prescription coverage.
  • Company-Paid Life and Disability Insurance plans.
  • 401K Retirement Savings Plan.
  • Paid bar renewal, CLEs, and training opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Generous paid time off.
