About The Position

Provides English Language Development (ELD) instruction to students identified as English Learners (ELs). Provides leadership and consultation as the second language expert/specialist to all staff in a school. Evaluates students' progress; maintains student records, for the school and administrative offices. Collaborates with classroom and content teachers to assure the integration of language development strategies across the interdisciplinary curriculum. Conducts screening to identify English Learners and leads all compliance processes including identification, reclassification, and monitoring of former ELs. For itinerant ESL teaching positions, school assignments will change during the year and teachers must be able to adjust as directed by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • All work experience related to the position must be included on the resume.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of: the modern methods, principles and practices of elementary, middle, and secondary education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of: the modern methods, principles and practices of English Language Arts and ESL
  • Demonstrated knowledge of: the theory and principles of second language acquisition, child growth and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to: constantly evaluate and update educational materials to meet the ever-changing needs of students.
  • Demonstrated ability to: create a learning environment conducive to self-directed and cooperative learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to: deliver and accurately score WIDA screener assessments (paper-pencil and online versions)

Responsibilities

  • Conducts and plans units of work including ESL and language arts content, process and sequence of study in accordance with the ELA standards as well as the ELD standards; participates in co-teaching to ensure language acquisition techniques are a component of the instructional program.
  • Conducts ESL proficiency level and other language development evaluations and assesses the language development skills of each student; provides data on the language needs of each student which is incorporated into the student's educational profile.
  • Serves as a resource for other professional staff regarding the utilization of language development strategies in the curriculum; ensures appropriate support is provided during classroom instruction through collaboration with the appropriate personnel.
  • Collaborates with English teachers on a weekly basis to prepare lesson plans.
  • Attends faculty meetings to discuss teaching methods and other strategies and participates in other academic activities.
  • Keeps abreast of new issues and developments in pedagogy and technical improvements in teaching aids, textbooks and materials.
  • Maintains a positive and respectful classroom environment.
  • Maintains attendance, grade, and other required records.
  • Provides professional development to classroom and content teachers during Common Planning Time
  • Supports staff in Multilingual Assessment Center (MAC) with enrollment and screening of new students as needed, including screening students at various schools across the district
  • Designs and delivers individualized ELD lessons based on student's proficiency level and grade level
  • Maintains weekly log to document students' progress in developing academic language and shares log with Supervisor for ongoing review and feedback
  • Maintains ongoing communication with classroom and content teachers of students in caseload
  • Maintains ongoing communication with principals and follows directives given by school principals
