About The Position

Johnson College is currently seeking an English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutor. The ESL tutor will provide individualized and group tutoring to students whose primary language is not English. The tutor will focus on helping students improve their academic English skills, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as cultural competency for success in a college environment. The ESL tutor plays a vital role in supporting student success and fostering a welcoming, inclusive learning environment. Johnson College provides real-world, hands-on learning in a supportive environment and prepares graduates to enter into or advance their in-demand careers. Johnson College was founded in 1912 and is the region's only technical college, offering 18 associate degrees, four academic certificates, and over 30 continuing education programs. A low student-to-instructor ratio supports an emphasis on hands-on learning. Located in Scranton on a 44-acre campus with a satellite campus serving the greater Hazleton area, the College is an accredited, private, non-profit, co-educational institution with a strong tradition or workng with regional businesses and industries to ensure a skilled and qualified workforce.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in English, TESOL, Linguistics, Education, or a related field.
• Strong command of English, including grammar and academic writing.
• Experience tutoring or teaching ESL students.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

• TESOL/TEFL certification or equivalent training, preferred.
• Familiarity with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, preferred.
• Experience working in an academic setting, particularly in higher education, preferred.
• Proficiency in a second language, preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one and group tutoring sessions focused on ESL student needs.
• Assist students with academic assignments, comprehension of course material, and development of effective study skills.
• Help students improve language skills, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading comprehension, and writing structure.
